9/14/2022 1:00:00 PM | Cross Country
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers will put out their full lineup on the course for the first time this season as 12 programs descend on Bloomington for the Coaching Tree Invitational.
During the final year of IU Head Coach Ron Helmer's coaching career, this meet will feature teams coached by people who ran or worked for Helmer during his illustrious, 50-plus year career.
The likes of defending national champions Northern Arizona and Helmer's previous school, Georgetown, will be in attendance for one of the final home meets of his career.
Five former IU runners will be coaching squads on Friday including Nolan Fife's South Dakota, Sarah Pease's Ohio, Tom Chorney and DeSean Turner's Miami (OH) and the host-Hoosiers, coached by Helmer and assistant/former athlete Andrew Poore.
31 Hoosiers are scheduled to run across the Women's 6K and Men's 8K on Friday morning at the Sam Bell Cross Country Course in Bloomington.
Seven of IU's 10 point scorers from last year's Big Ten Cross Country Championships return to the team in 2022 and all are set to make a season's debut on Friday morning.
The reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Gabriel Sanchez, led the charge for IU at the Redhawk Rumble on Labor Day Weekend.
He was IU's top finisher on the men's side, crossing the line in 24:53.18. Phoebe Bates paced the way for the women with a personal best time of 17:52.72.
Along with Northern Arizona and Georgetown, North Carolina and Villanova will be among IU's challengers this weekend.
The women's 6K will begin at 10:00 AM with the men's 8K to follow at 10:45 AM.
