BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Cross Country teams raced in their first full competition of the season on Friday as 12 women's teams and 10 men's teams gathered in Bloomington for the Coaching Tree Invitational, an homage to IU Head Coach Ron Helmer in his final season.
The IU Women finished in third place with 113 points behind No. 13 North Carolina and No. 19 Georgetown.
Sarah Schmitt led the charge for the women, finishing in 9th with a time of 20:29.4. She moved up three spots into the top-10 over the last 3000 meters, just five seconds off a top-five finish.
She helped lead a fast day on the course for IU as nine different women recorded personal bests including herself, Phoebe Bates (21:09.5), Jenna Barker (21:21.0) and Claire Overfelt (21:45.4) who were all in the top-50 against a competitive field.
Tori Schmidt made her collegiate debut to join a group of five total women running the first 6K of their collegiate careers.
Schmitt now owns the fastest time by Hoosier at the Sam Bell Cross Country Course. She was IU's top-finisher at last year's Big Ten Cross Country Championships and returns as a legitimate all-Big Ten caliber runner.
On the men's side, IU was fifth with 144 points behind No. 17 North Carolina (53), No. 23 Georgetown (58), No. 1 Northern Arizona (60) and Miami (OH) (88).
Jake Gebhardt paced the Hoosiers in 11th place with finishes in 30th (Gabriel Sanchez), 31st (Keelan Grant), 37th (Abe Eckman) and 47th (Camden Marshall) rounding out the scoring on Friday morning.
Gebhardt ran to a new 8K personal best on what proved to be a very fast course. He was among five men to PR along with Eckman, Marshall, Jaylen Castillo and Andrew Anderson.
Eckman dropped nearly a minute off his personal best in just his second-career race. He ran 25:58.67 at the Redhawk Rumble earlier this month before shaving 54 seconds off that mark on Friday.
IU has a week off before a trip to Lehigh at the end of the month for the Paul Short Invite. One of the most prestigious meets, the Nuttycombe Invite in Wisconsin, will be the final meet to proceed the Big Ten Championships in October.
