BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Just a month out from the Big Ten Championships, the Indiana Cross Country team ran to a number of personal bests at the Paul Short Invite on the campus of Lehigh University.
The women finished 8th (287) in the team race out of 46 teams while the men were 11th (398) out of 46. North Carolina won both team trophies on Friday morning.
On the women's side, Sarah Schmitt led an impressive contingent of times, pacing the Hoosiers with a 14th place finish and a personal best of 19:57.0.
This marks the first time in her collegiate career she's broken 20 minutes in a 6K and shaves 32 seconds off of her previous personal best.
Eight women set personal bests including Mariah Wehrle (20:14.4) and Jenna Barker (20:32.4). Maddie Dalton and Phoebe Bates rounded out the scoring for the Hoosiers.
The men were led by Gabriel Sanchez's 36th place finish and personal best of 23:32.0. He took over a minute off his lifetime best to pace the Hoosiers at the Paul Short Invite.
Jake Gebhardt (23:38.4) and Camden Marshall (24:00.6) followed with Austin Haskett (24:08.6) and Dustin Horter (24:15.7) rounding out the scoring.
17 different runners set 6K or 8K personal bests in a very competitive College Gold field.
Five more runners set personal bests in the Open Division.
The Hoosiers will prepare for their final tune up before the postseason with the Nuttycombe Invite on Friday, Oct. 14th at the campus of Wisconsin.
