BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's soccer (3-2-2, 0-1-1 B1G) and Michigan State (2-4-2, 0-0-1 B1G) played to a 1-1 draw Friday (Sept. 23) night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium as each team earned a point in the Big Ten Conference standings.
Senior defender Brett Bebej scored his first goal of the season in the 40th minute to give IU a lead heading into the half. The Spartans punched back late, however, with a 72nd-minute equalizer. The Hoosiers led in the shots department, 19-8, with MSU's lone shot on goal coming as its score.
KEY MOMENTS
• 7' – Indiana was nearly in as early as the seventh minute as sophomore forward Samuel Sarver flashed a cross towards redshirt senior forward Ryan Wittenbrink, who flicked it towards goal to force a diving save from Michigan State senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty.
• 12' – Junior forward Herbert Endeley was a hair away from the opener when his shot from the edge of the box curled into the woodwork and back towards play.
• 40' – The Hoosiers won a throw in on the right wing deep in their attacking third. Senior Nyk Sessock launched it in to Bebej about eight yards from goal. The ball fell to Bebej's feet, and the redshirt senior took a couple of touches before firing between the legs of the keeper.
• 50' – Indiana's high press nearly paid off five minutes into the second half when an errant pass was chased down by sophomore forward Tommy Mihalic in IU's final third. Mihalic got around a defender and into a one-on-one with the keeper but at an awkward angle. So, Mihalic passed across goal to an open redshirt junior Quinten Helmer, but a tackle by MSU freshman forward Tyler Crawford was just in time to block Helmer's shot.
• 72' – Michigan State equalized via a header from junior forward Greyson Mercer, assisted by graduate midfielder Louis Sala.
• 90' – As the final 10 seconds ticked off the clock, Finnerty booted a goal kick. As the game seemed to be ending, Sala jumped towards the ball and took down IU sophomore midfielder Patrick McDonald. Sala was assessed a red card, and, after a review, the Hoosiers were given a free kick near midfield with four seconds on the clock. On the restart, the ball found the head of junior defender Joey Maher, whose shot was saved by Finnerty. The play was reviewed to see if the ball went over the line, but the replay confirmed no goal.
