
Indiana Wins Dramatic Five-Set Match against Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A late Maryland surge gave Indiana Volleyball (8-6, 1-1) everything it could handle on Sunday afternoon at the Xfinity Pavilion.
The Hoosiers won the first two sets, but the Terrapins battled back to win the third and fourth. After going down 6-2 in the final frame, IU bounced back to close out Maryland 25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 19-25, 17-15 and earn its first conference victory of the season.
IU's victory was the first in College Park since the 2014 season. It was IU's first victory away from home in the Big Ten since Oct. 8, 2021, against Rutgers.
Against a prolific blocking team, the Hoosiers hit .248 and had three with double-digit kills (Mady Saris, Candela Alonso-Corcelles and Savannah Kjolhede) on the afternoon.
The Hoosiers return home for the first time in a month on Wednesday evening when Iowa visits Wilkinson Hall at 7:00 PM.
SET 1 (Indiana 25, Maryland 21)
• Mady Saris' service ace helped lead the Hoosiers to a 5-2 lead early in the opening frame.
• Down 16-13 in the frame, IU staged a 6-1 run behind ace from Emily Fitzner and kills from Savannah Kjolhede and Mady Saris to take a 19-17 lead.
• The Hoosiers closed out the frame on a 4-0 run with an emphatic ace from Camryn Haworth finishing off the set 25-21.
SET 2 (Indiana 25, Maryland 16)
• The second set opened in back-and-forth fashion, but the Hoosiers pulled away to a 12-8 advantage with a Morgan Geddes kill helping the attack.
• Camryn Haworth provided a huge solo block to put the Hoosiers up 19-14 with all the momentum.
• Candela Alonso-Corcelles turned it on late with eight kills through two sets but Camryn Haworth took one herself at the net to close out IU's win in the second set, 25-16.
SET 3 (Maryland 26, Indiana 24)
• Multiple attack errors from Maryland and a service ace from Savannah Kjolhede ensured the Hoosiers a 11-8 lead early in the third.
• A pair of kills from Maryland middle blocker Rainelle Jones gave the lead back to the Terrapins at 17-15.
• Three-straight points on kills from Mady Saris and Camryn Haworth sent the Hoosiers back into the lead at 21-20.
• IU had its first match point of the afternoon at 24-23 in the third set but the Terrapins bounced back to squeeze the third set 26-24.
SET 4 (Maryland 25, Indiana 19)
• The Hoosiers and Terrapins exchanged points through the first rallies in the fourth set before a pair of Maryland errors handed IU a 10-8 lead.
• IU got within three points at 20-17 but Maryland pulled away to take the fourth set and bring the match level.
SET 5 (Indiana 17, Maryland 15)
• Indiana was forced into a timeout with Maryland leading 6-2 in the set.
• A fantastic series with Mady Saris serving saw the Hoosiers go on a 4-0 run to bring IU level at 6-all.
• Candela Alonso-Corcelles sent down a kill off the hands of the Terrapins to give IU a 9-8 lead and force a Maryland timeout.
• Mady Saris sent the Hoosiers to another match point before a Maryland error closed out the IU victory.

• Three different players had career highs in kills on the afternoon with Mady Saris (20), Candela Alonso-Corcelles (15) and Savannah Kjolhede (12) leading the way offensively.
