Indiana Opens Season with Impressive Performances at Redhawk Rumble

OXFORD, Ohio – The opening meet of the year saw 14 Hoosiers get their 2022 campaign underway at Miami Ohio's Redhawk Rumble on Saturday morning.
IU was paced by Gabriel Sanchez (1st, 24:53.18) and Phoebe Bates (3rd, 17:52.72) in their respective races as the women raced a 5K and the men, an 8K.
11 different Hoosiers raced to personal bests including collegiate debuts from Claire Overfelt, Brenner Hanna, Audrey Mendrys, Abe Eckman, Cole Raymond and Jaylen Castillo.
Sanchez's victory follows a season where he was named the Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the Year and raced at both the Big Ten Championships and NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
The Hoosiers return to action in two weeks with the Coaching Tree Invitational, hosted on IU's home course.
This will be the last season with Ron Helmer as the head coach of the IU program. The Coaching Tree Invitational will be contested with teams that are coached by protegees of Helmer.
National Powerhouse Northern Arizona among others will be in attendance to race the Hoosiers in a handful of weeks.
