BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The distance crew will tote the baton this weekend in South Bend as the Hoosiers look for both Distance Medley Relay teams to earn spots at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The top-12 relays in the nation will earn bids to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. in early March.
This weekend marks a big display of action for the DMR, especially on the men's side. A number of last chance meets, including the DMR Invitational in Winston Salem, N.C. will feature strong entries.
The current cutoff time on the women's side is 11:00.57 (Oregon State) heading into the final weekend of the regular season. On the men's side, Boston College currently holds the final time at 9:44.41 but both marks are expected to be lowered significantly this weekend.
IU's women's DMR team this weekend is expected to include legs from Maddie Dalton (1200m), Alyssa Robinson (400m), Jenna Barker (800m) and Sarah Schmitt (1600m).
The women haven't qualified a team through since the 2019 season when it finished 8th in the nation behind the team of Haley Harris, Natalie Price, Kelsey Harris and Katherine Receveur.
On the men's side, IU's lineup is expected to include Camden Marshall on the 1200-meter leg, either Micah Camble or Shaton Vaughn on 400-meter duties, Parker Raymond at 800 meters and Jake Gebhardt will tote the baton for the 1600-meter leg.
Head Coach Ron Helmer has created a legacy in the DMR on the men's side at IU, taking a team to the national meet on 12 occasions since taking over the program, tied for the second most in the nation during that period.
The Hoosiers were national runner-up's in the event in both 2011 and 2012.
A select group of individuals will run this weekend as well, looking to lower their season's best times. Maddie Russin, Elizabeth Stanhope, Nico Colchico, Nick Couyoumjian, Dustin Horter and Keefer Soehngen will all run the 800 meters. Mikaela Ramirez and Phoebe Bates will compete in the Mile.
Action at Notre Dame will begin Saturday afternoon with the Men's DMR at 12:00 PM. It's the final regular season meet before the Big Ten Indoor Championships on February 24 and 25.
