ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Indiana women's swimming and diving will see plenty of podium Thursday (Feb. 16) night.
The Hoosiers will have 11 championship finalists in the evening session of day two at the 2023 Big Ten Women's Championships after preliminary heats took place Thursday morning inside Canham Natatorium. IU added seven additional A finalist swimmers and three divers to its 400-yard medley relay as it looks to extend its lead in the competition.
Indiana had its top performance in the 500-yard freestyle as a trio of sophomores reached the A final. Mariah Denigan led the way for IU with the second-fast time of the morning, going a career-best 4:40.72. Ching Hwee Gan took the No. 7 spot with a 4:42.39, and Elyse Heiser nabbed the final championship spot in a personal record 4:42.82. Heiser improved her time by nearly 12 seconds from last year's conference championships, when she clocked 4:54.56.
Diving added three more A finalists in 1-meter diving prelims. Junior Anne Fowler was .05 points off the top spot, scoring 308.40 points in the afternoon. Sophomores Skyler Liu (286.45) and Megan Carter (285.65) took the final two seeds in the championship final. IU is the only program with three divers in the A final.
Seniors Noelle Peplowski and Mackenzie Looze earned A final positions in the 200 IM. Peplowski's 1:56.32 was good enough for the No. 3 seed in tonight's final, while Looze went 1:57.29.
Two more Hoosiers reached the championship final in the 50 free. Senior Ashley Turak went a season-best 22.11 to claim the No. 6 seed, while freshman Kristina Paegle finished right behind her as the No. 7 seed with a 22.17.
Indiana's 400 medley relay ranks No. 8 in the country and No. 2 in conference after it went 3:30.60 midseason.
