Indiana Softball to Compete in UNCG Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball (3-6) looks to bounce back at the UNCG Invitational this weekend against UCONN, Delaware and UNCG in the tournament at UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

LAST TIME OUT
• Indiana faced five top-25 teams at the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. where they went 0-5 on the weekend.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
• UCONN won the Big East regular season title in 2022 with an overall record of 38-18 and a 20-4 conference record.
• The Huskies were voted to finish third in the Big East Preseason Coaches Poll.
• They return two all-conference players in sophomore Lexi Hastings and junior Jana Sanden. The Huskies freshman Grace Jenkins was named the Big East Freshman of the Week. She leads the team with four RBI, .471 batting average, and a .500 on base percentage.
• Pitcher Hope Jenkins has tossed 21.0 innings and holds a 1-1 record with one save while Meghan O'Neil is 2-0 this season in the circle.
• Delaware won the 2022 CAA Regular Season title last season with a 29-16 overall record and 11-4 in conference play.
• The Blue Hens are an experienced team as they return 15 from last season.
UD started the season 0-5 with their last Blue Hens are on a five-game losing streak, most recently losing to George Washington, 3-0.
• Scheivert is leading the team with a .417 batting average and has stolen five bases successfully.
• Emily Winburn was named CAA Pitcher of the Week holding a record of 2-3 in the circle after pitching 29.0 innings.
• Among the nation, the Blue Hens are 21st in fielding percentage. They are leading the conference in batting average, fielding percentage, on base percentage, stolen bases per game, and walks.
• UNCG went 4-0 this weekend at their own Spiro Classic with two wins over Morehead State and two victories over UNCW.
• Nationally, the Spartans rank 12th in walks, 19th in doubles (17), 29th in slugging percentage (0.518), 33rd in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.71), 34th in doubles per game (1.70) and home runs per game (1.10) and 38th in on base percentage (0.411) and scoring (6.30).
• Jamie Chartrand leads the Spartans with a .529 batting average. She also leads the Spartans with 19 total strikeouts in the circle after pitching 17.0 innings.
• UNCG went 4-0 last weekend in the Spiro Classic against Morehead State and UNC Wilmington. The Spartans dropped their midweek game against Campbell, 3-1, despite career high in strikeouts from Chartrand.

• Indiana leads the series against UCONN, 2-1. The Hoosiers will take the field against the Huskies for the first time since 2008. In their last match up, IU dropped the game, 4-1, in Chattanooga, Tenn.
• IU leads the series against Delaware 2-0. The teams played two games in 2016 against each other in Miami, Fla. where the Hoosiers won 5-2 in the first game and 5-0 in the second.
• The Hoosiers will face UNCG for the first time in program history.
TARYN IT UP
• Second baseman Taryn Kern is making plays on the field for the Hoosiers. She has started every game for the Hoosier in the infield and tallied two hits, one RBI and seven assists in her rookie debut.
• Kern holds third highest on base percentage on the team with .458.
• The San Jose, Calif., native, started in all five games for the Hoosiers at the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational facing four top-25 teams.
• Against No. 22 ranked Louisiana, Kern hit an RBI single to put the Hoosiers on the board.
• She went four for 11 with three walks on the weekend and is tied second on the team for most hits on the season with six.
COPELAND NO-HITTER
• Sophomore Brianna Copeland threw her first career no-hitter against Prairie View A&M tallying a career-high ten strikeouts, along with no hits, one run and zero walks. After opening weekend, she has an era of .60 after pitching 11.2 innings and totaling 14 strikeouts.
SWING BATTER BATTER
• Junior infielder Brooke Benson had a stellar performance at the plate opening weekend. In 10 at bats, she jumpstarted the Hoosiers' offense totaling four hits, one double, one home run and seven RBI. Benson hit the ninth career home run against Prairie View A&M to take a 2-1 lead against the Panthers.
POWER HITTER
• Sophomore Sarah Stone had some power hits for the Hoosiers on Opening Day. four hits on the weekend, with four RBIs with three doubles. On Opening Day, her batting average against Pitt was .667 and PVAMU .500.
