Indiana Softball Travels to Memphis for Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana softball (15-9) travels to Memphis, Tenn. for a tournament against the Memphis Tigers and the Northwestern State Demons at the Tigers Softball Complex on Friday and Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Hoosiers went 6-0 on the road trip to Nashville weekend going 5-0 at the Lady Bison Classic, winning the series against Evansville and Lipscomb and defeated Akron with a 5-0 shutout win. IU defeated Belmont on Tuesday, 10-6, to go 6-0 on the trip.
- Freshman Taryn Kern had nine hits with a .643 batting avg., eight runs, two doubles, three walks, three home runs and 12 RBI with a 1.429 slugging percentage at the Lady Bison Classic.
- Indiana defeated Belmont, 10-6, to extend their winning streak to eight.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
- Northwestern State (12-10) went 1-3 on the weekend dropping the series against Liberty University 2-1. On Tuesday, the Demons traveled to Louisiana Tech where they lost 5-0 in Ruston, La.
- Junior first baseman Kat Marshall hold a .344 batting average to lead the Demons' offense with 21 hits, four runs, four doubles, one home run and 11 RBI on the season. The Brenham, Texas, native has also earned 10 free passes this season at the plate.
- Senior Bronte Rhoden leads Northwestern State on the mound with a 2.52 ERA with a 1-1 record on the season with only 25 innings pitched. Junior Kenzie Seely is 3-1 on the season with 38 innings pitched boasting a 2.58 ERA for the Demons.
- Memphis (13-6) hosted Indiana State, North Alabama and Pitt for their Tiger Classic tournament where they went 1-3 on the weekend. They picked up a 10-9 win against the Sycamores before the second game in the series was canceled. North Alabama defeated the Tigers 6-1 in the first and run-ruled them 11-3 to take the series.
- The Tigers fell 14-0 in five as Pitt clinched the victory with the run-rule.
- Junior RHP Hallie Siems leads Memphis on the mound with three wins on the season and a 5.63 ERA with 82 innings pitched.
- Sixth year utility player Kendall Lee leads the Tigers' offense with a .327 batting average on 18 hits. She has hit five doubles, two home runs, with nine RBI, scoring a team high eight runs on the season.
SERIES NOTES
- Indiana leads the series against Memphis 2-0. The Hoosiers defeated the Tigers 9-1 in five innings on March 11, 2017.
- The Hoosiers will face Northwestern State for the first time in 23 years. The Demons lead the series 1-0 after a 7-3 win in Tucson, Ariz., on March 4, 2000.
TARYN IT UP
- Freshman Taryn Kern won Big Ten Player of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week after her performance at the Lady Bison Classic. She totaled eight hits with a .571 batting avg., eight runs, two doubles, three walks, three home runs and 12 RBI with a 1.429 slugging percentage at the Lady Bison Classic.
- She leads the team with 21 RBI and five home runs on the season.
- In her rookie debut, she tallied two hits, one RBI and seven assists in her rookie debut.
- The San Jose, Calif., native, started in all five games for the Hoosiers at the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational facing four top-25 teams.
OUT OF THE PARK(ER)
- Freshman Avery Parker hit her first career home run against Lipscomb. She added three more on the weekend, totaling eight RBI in Nashville, Tenn.
- On the season, she holds a batting average of .300 with 15 hits. She has scored 13 runs, four doubles, one triple totaling 13 RBI.
COPELAND IN THE CIRCLE
- Sophomore pitcher Brianna Copeland went 3-0 in the circle at the Lady Bison Classic, totaling 19 innings pitched and 24 strikeouts.
- The Pelham, Ala., native is now 7-0 on the season boasting a 1.86 ERA with 52.2 innings pitched and 58 strikeouts after a win against Belmont.
- She threw her first career no-hitter against Prairie View A&M tallying a career-high ten strikeouts, along with no hits, one run and zero walks. After opening weekend, she has an era of .60 after pitching 11.2 innings and totaling 14 strikeouts.
- Offensively, Copeland is hitting .362 with 21 hits and 17 free passes on the season. She has scored 15 runs totaling six doubles, one triple, two home runs and 17 RBI.
- The Hoosiers tallied 16 stolen bases at the Lady Bison Classic.
- Indiana leads the conference with 54 stolen bases this season.
- IU's eight stolen bases against IUPUI is the most in a game from a Big Ten school this season.
- Nationally, IU is tied 19th in stolen bases and rank second in the Big Ten.
