3/30/2023 9:00:00 AM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A full squad of Hoosiers will head to the Sunshine State this weekend for the Pepsi Florida Relays on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville.
All event areas will be represented for the first time this outdoor season with 42 athletes making the trip down south for one of the most competitive meets in the early portion of the year.
Following strong performances from sprinters and distance runners in Raleigh last weekend, the throwers, jumpers and pole vaulters will look to emulate the same success as IU continues the outdoor campaign.
Competition begins Friday in Gainesville with Jayden Ulrich debuting in the discus to open field events (2:30 PM) and the men's 4x800 relay (11:55 AM) opening the running events.
The Hoosiers are scheduled to compete in 18 events on both days, pending qualification to finals in the 100/110-meter hurdles, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.
THE MEET
Location: Gainesville, Fla. (Percy Beard Track)
Dates: March 31st-April 1st
Start 11:40 AM (Friday), 11:00 AM (Saturday)

Alyssa Robinson and Shaton Vaughn headline a contingent of six runners in the 400 meters for the Hoosiers.

Maddie Russin, Camden Marshall and Hope Purcell are among the notables making their season debuts outdoors this weekend in Florida.
RALEIGH RELAYS RECAP
The Sprinters and Distance Crew opened up the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays at NC State.
Jake Gebhardt led the charge with an outstanding race at 5000 meters, clocking a 13:37.70. That time was the No. 4 mark in program history and put him second in the nation in the early stages of the season.
Gabriel Sanchez made his return to the track for the first time since December with a 14:03.98 opener in the 5000 meters.
Shaton Vaughn had a solid opening weekend for the Hoosiers with runs of 48.57 (400 meters) and 52.59 (400-meter hurdles). Alyssa Robinson ran 24.14 (200 meters) and 54.87 (400 meters) to kick off her season outdoors. Both athletes also ran on their respective 4x400 relay teams.
Parker Raymond clocked a 1:49.45 in the 800 meters with Keefer Soehngen (1:51.44) and Jaylen Castillo (1:51.81) each breaking 1:52 in the race.
Antonio Laidler made his debut over 400 meters in 48.85 while also running the 4x100 and 4x400 relay.
Behind the team of John Colquitt, Laidler, Trelee Banks and Christopher Grant, IU ran 40.86 in its first 4x100 of the year.
Sarah Schmitt, Jenna Barker, Phoebe Bates, Maddie Dalton, Tori Schmidt, Alyssa Skorge and Katelyn Winton all ran 5K's to open the outdoor season.
2023 OUTDOOR PRIMER
There are 21 events contested at the Big Ten and NCAA levels during the outdoor campaign. Outdoor-specific events include the 4x100 relay, the 1500 meters, the Steeplechase, the 10,000 meters, the 400-meter hurdles, the Discus, the Hammer and the Javelin. The Heptathlon (W)/Decathlon (M) also introduce new events to increase the workload.
A number of events transition from indoor-specific distances to the standard outdoor distance. For example, the 60 meters indoors becomes 100 meters outdoors.
Despite losing the DMR in the transition to outdoors, the Hoosiers add a number of key pieces to its lineup this time of year.
Jayden Ulrich (Discus), Sean Mockler (Hammer) and Noah Koch (Discus) all add their strongest event. Ulrich was the 2022 Big Ten Champion as a freshman and she and Mockler both hold school records in their respective events.
The 1500 meters and Steeplechase have both been kind to the Hoosiers over the years. After a strong indoor season, Jake Gebhardt will steeple outdoors where he looks to score big points for the team.
Shaton Vaughn and David Olowookere have both been strong 400-meter hurdlers during their career and have the chance to run their primary event outdoors.
