Kern’s Home Run Lifts Hoosiers Over Jaguars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball (9-9) run rules IUPUI, 10-2, after freshman Taryn Kern hits a two RBI home run over the center field wall in the bottom of the sixth to wrap up the last game of the Hoosier Classic on Monday afternoon at Andy Mohr Field.

KEY MOMENTS
• IUPUI came out swinging with a leadoff home run over the left field line, but sophomore Sarah Stone would put the Hoosiers in front with a two RBI single down the right side for the lead.
• In the bottom of the second, senior Cora Basset hit an RBI triple to right center to push the lead.
• Sophomore Kinsey Mitchell continued the momentum after Indiana loaded the bases. She stepped up to the plate, hitting an infield single to earn three RBI, 6-1.
• IU held it down in the field in the top of the fourth with a 1-2-3 inning to close it out.
• The Jaguars earned two hits in the top of the fifth to score another, 6-2.
• In the top of the fifth, freshman Elle Smith reached on an error and earned two stolen bases before capitalizing on a throwing error for another run.
• Bassett tallied her second hit of the afternoon with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
• Kern was up for the challenge as she homered to center field for two RBI to run rule the Jags.
NOTABLES
• Kern hit her second career home run.
• The Hoosiers totaled eight hits with nine RBI against IUPUI.
• Indiana stole seven bases for a season total of 38, tying the Big Ten for most in a single game this season.
• Sophomore Pitcher Brianna Copeland is now 3-0 on the season in the circle.

The Hoosiers head to Nashville, Tenn., for the Lipscomb Tournament featuring Evansville, Lipscomb and Akron. IU will face Evansville at 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday for their first game in the double header followed by Lipscomb at 6:30 p.m.
