BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers captured nine event titles with consistent improvement in a competitive final day of the Indiana Invitational at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Indiana continued to compete and improve as they combined for 15 event wins and 26 personal bests on the weekend.
"This early in the season we really want to see them be competitive whether that is on the relays or multiple races," Assistant Coach for Sprints, Hurdles and Relay Valerie Brown said. "We did a lot of loading this week, so for a lot of them to come back today, race and execute race plans and being competitive on those relays is what we want to see this early in the season. We are really progressing through training and focusing on what is going to matter in a month from now. We don't focus on time. We focus on competitiveness and if we are executing what we need to do whether that's the block start, the finish of our race, or putting the races together. It's focusing on helping us get to a better place, so when it is Big Ten time, we are in a position to be more competitive than we are right now."
The men's "A" and "B" relays ran season best times along with the women's "A" relay.
John Colquitt finished second in a photo finish with a time of 8.152 in the 60 meter hurdle finals.
Ryann Parrish finished fourth in a with a personal best in the 400 meters with a time of 57.80 after achieving a PR in the 600 meters yesterday.
Freshman sprinters Kristina Vincic and Symone Adams also set personal bests on day one in the 60 meters and 200 meters.
"As a group being more competitive at this meet was exciting to see, but you have to give credit to Ryann Parrish," Brown said. "She is young, but you are seeing the fight and the competitive edge in her races through progression and setting personal bests. She stood out to me who someone is trending in the right direction. Kristina and Symone are also in a better place. With our longer sprinters, they were loaded pretty well, so for them it was just getting through the weekend pretty healthy."
Maddie Russin wins her second event of the weekend in the 800 meters. She breaks the nation's top-25 list as she checks in at No. 23 with a season best time of 2:09.37.
The men's mid-distance group swept the 800 meters with Camden Marshall taking the top spot with the nation's seventh fastest time. Parker Raymond finished second in the event to claim the 10th fastest time this season. Keelan Grant, Jaylen Castillo and Martin Segurola rounded out the event in the top-five for the Hoosiers.
Mariah Wehrle and Austin Haskett claimed the top-spots in the 3k race. Haskett set another personal best on the weekend with a time of 8:08.42 after running a sub-four-mile with a time of 3:58.59 on day one of the meet.
"I think for every distance runner wanting to break four [minutes] is always in the back of their mind. It is a huge accomplishment and such a surreal moment," Haskett said. "And being able to do it at home in front of all my family and friends is an awesome experience."
In the field, Jessica Mercier cleared a height of 4.27m/14-0.00 in the pole vault for a new personal best with the cream and crimson. She also earns the ninth best mark in the nation.
"I am happy with my performance," Mercier said. "But I obviously wanted more to secure my spot for nationals. I like where I am sitting right now, and that I am improving a little each time. I think this is the second time I have cleared over 14 [feet] which is good. I am just enjoying and having fun pole vaulting more."
Grayson Rolen won the High Jump event, tying his season best performance of 2.04m/6-08.25.
Garrett Messer held his lead from day one to win his first heptathlon with a total of 4,691 points.
Teammate Max Grangier moved up from fourth to second place in his final three events of the Heptathlon. He finished the first of his career with a point total of 4,609.
"It was our first one obviously, so we knew going in it was going to be tiring and tough," Messer said. "We knew that if we had a bad event, we couldn't get down on ourselves but had to move onto the next event. I am really proud of the way we moved through it. We stayed strong, stayed together and came out on top."
Grangier added, "We had to figure out what it feels like. Day two was the better day for me with the 1000 meter and pole vault. We know what we have to work on now."
Up next, the Hoosiers will split up as the distance group heads to Boston, Mass., for the John Thomas Terrier Classic with the rest of the group headed to Louisville, Kent., for the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.
