Indiana Wrestling Leaves Michigan State Open with Seven Placers

EAST LANSING, Mich. ––––– Indiana Wrestling wrapped up competition at the Michigan State Open on Saturday with nine Hoosiers competing.

Indiana had six wrestlers compete attached in Joey Buttler (141), Aidan Torres (149), Ryan Garvick (157), Chris Crawford (165), Derek Gilcher (165), Nick Pavlechko (285). The other three Hoosier wrestlers competed unattached and included Cole Rhemrev (149), Magnus Kuokkanen (174) and Robert Major (174).

Crawford and Garvick both competed in the Freshman/Sophomore division at their weight classes.

Seven of the nine wrestlers placed with Crawford winning first place, Gilcher taking second, Buttler and Garvick in third, Pavlechko and Torres getting fourth and Rhemrev finishing in fifth place.

No team scoring was taken for the tournament.

KEY MOMENTS
• Chris Crawford won all five of his matches to take first place in the Freshman/Sophomore division of the 165 Bracket.
• After losing in his first match, Nick Pavlechko (285) worked his way through the wrestlebacks to the third place match before taking fourth.
• In his first matches back from injury, Derek Gilcher won two matches by major decision.
• In Ryan Garvick's (157) first career match he defeated Ian O'Connor by fall (4:51).

NOTABLES
• Crawford won his first collegiate tournament in his first appearance.
• Gilcher's tournament appearance marked his first time competing since December 2023 when his season ended early due to injury.
• Crawford, Garvick, Pavlechko made their collegiate debuts.
• Torres won three of his matches by bonus-point victories.
