Indiana Wrestling to Face Central Michigan on the Road

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– Indiana will head north for a Friday dual at 7 p.m. at Central Michigan. The match will mark Indiana's third dual of the season and first since the opening weekend of the season when it defeated Cal Baptist and Cal Poly in the Golden State.
BATTLE WITH THE CHIPPEWAS:
-Indiana's match at Central Michigan will be rematch from a season ago. The Hoosiers defeated the Chippewas, 25-15, last year.
-Indiana leads the all-time series 13-3 and previous to the 2023 matchup, the two programs hadn't faced each other since 1997.
-Central Michigan is led by two experienced and ranked wrestlers in No. 18 Johnny Lovett (157) and No. 21 Alex Cramer (174).
-Dependent on who wrestles from Indiana's probables list, those weight classes could make for some ranked matchups as No. 28 Bryce Lowery (157) and No. 25 Roman Rogotzke (174) might wrestle.
-Central Michigan has not wrestled in a dual yet this season, but it did open its season at the Michigan State Open where nine Hoosiers competed in.
-The Chippewas had 11 placers in the tournament, including three wrestlers taking second: Mason Shrader (149), Lovett (157), Adrien Cramer (184).
WEST COAST REWIND:
-Indiana opened its season in California last weekend, winning two duals.
-The Hoosiers defeated Cal Baptist in the first ever meeting between the programs, 34-4, and topped Cal Poly, 31-11.
-No. 25 Gabe Sollars (197) won both of his matches by fall after leading the team in pins last year with 12.
-In his collegiate debut, Sam Goin (184) defeated Cal Baptist's No. 26 Nathan Haas by decision, 4-2.
-Bryce Lowery (157) won his first two college matches, including a ranked win over No. 20 Legend Lamer from Cal Poly to earn a No. 29 ranking himself.
-Jacob Moran (125) won both of his matches by major decision.
-Against Cal Poly, No. 24 Roman Rogotzke (174) earned a win over No. 11 Adam Kemp by decision, 2-1, in his first match of the season.
EXPERIENCED CORE:
-Of Indiana's routine lineup members, six are on their fifth or sixth year of college wrestling.
-Jacob Moran (125) and Derek Gilcher (165) are each in their fifth season while Angelo Rini (133), Nick South (174), DJ Washington (184) and Jacob Bullock (285) are all in their sixth season.
RETURN TO THE LINEUP:
-Moran, Porter, Gilcher and Bullock are all competing after nearly a full calendar year off from wrestling for the Hoosiers.
-Moran, Porter and Bullock each took a redshirt last season after competing in the Indiana lineup in 2022-23.
-Moran and Bullock are both competing at 125 and 285 lbs. while Porter is up to 141 after previously competing at 133 lbs.
-Bullock was an NCAA Qualifier in 2023 and was one win away from qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Team Trials this past spring.
-Porter was an alternate at 133 lbs. for the 2023 NCAA Championships.
-Gilcher is healthy again after suffering a season-ending injury in December last year.
-He was an NCAA Qualifier at 157 lbs. in 2023 in a season where he had seven ranked wins and took eighth place on the podium at the Big Ten Championships.
HIGH-LEVEL RECRUITING:
-Indiana brought in eight freshmen this fall to bolster the team's roster.
-The freshmen include Chris Crawford, Ryan Garvick, Sam Goin, Matt Hart, Chase Leech, Caleb Marzolino, Nick Pavlechkko and Lucas Peters.
-InterMat ranked it the 14th best recruiting class in the 2024 cycle.
-Seven of Indiana's eight freshmen were ranked in the MatScouts' Senior Big Board which charts the top 250 recruits in the country.
-The class includes two in-state Hoosiers in Goin and Leech as well as wrestlers from five other states (Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, New York and Wisconsin).
TRANSFER TUNE-UP:
-As part of Indiana's ten new wrestlers, two of them are transfers.
-The transfers include Angelo Rini from Columbia and Logan Frazier from Virginia Tech. Both wrestlers will compete this year at 133 lbs.
-Rini arrives in Bloomington after spending five years at Columbia. He follows suit from Dan Fongaro who did the same thing last year after doing five years at Columbia before spending a sixth season at IU.
-A Kirtland, Ohio native, Rini was an NCAA Qualifier in 2023 after finishing third at the EIWA Championships. He went 1-2 at NCAAs.
-His 2023-24 campaign ended early due to a season-ending injury after starting 8-2.
-He had wins over No. 14 Nic Bouzakis (Ohio State), No. 7 Chris Cannon (Michigan) and No. 17 Julian Farber (Northern Iowa) and was ranked as high as No. 11 prior to injury.
-Frazier went 10-7 in his redshirt season at Virginia Tech with one win by tech fall and three pins.
-The transfer to IU brings Frazier back to his home state as he is a Crown Point, Ind. native.
ATTENDANCE GROWTH:
-Since Angel Escobedo took over, Indiana has seen tremendous growth in its attendance at home duals.
-Last season, averaged 2,111 fans per dual which ranked No. 16 by the National Wrestling Media Association.
PROMOTED:
-C.J. Red was promoted to a full-time assistant coach role in the offseason after serving as a volunteer assistant coach the previous two seasons.
-Red was a three-time All-American and five-time NCAA Qualifier at Nebraska.
-He also was a four-time, undefeated state champion at New Palestine High School.
OFFSEASON WORK:
-The Indiana Wrestling team had a number of wrestlers compete in offseason competition to get better and chase international goals.
-Twelve student-athletes competed in the U20 World Team Trials and U23 National Tournament last June at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
-There were Hoosier wrestlers competing in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle competition with six finishing on the podium across bothstyles.
-Derek Gilcher (74 kg), Tyler Lillard (79 kg), Nick South (79 kg), DJ Washington (86kg) and Jacob Bullock (125 kg) all were All-Americans in Freestyle while Blaine Frazier (61 kg) was one in Greco-Roman.
-Gilcher, South and Bullock each finished in fifth place.
GEOGRAPHICAL DISPERSION:
-Indiana's roster features wrestlers everywhere across the country.
-Twelve wrestlers on the team are home grown, in-state Hoosiers. Three of them went to high school together at Crown Point and all graduated in 2023 (Bahl, L. Frazier, Goin).
-Of the 30 wrestlers on the team, there are 13 different states represented.
-The states represented on Indiana's roster include Indiana, California, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin.
