No. 16 Indiana Finishes Friday at Big Ten Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 16-ranked Indiana rowing won its last three races of an afternoon session in which it won four contests. The Hoosiers completed two sessions Friday (April 19), the first of two days of the Big Ten Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
The Hoosiers raced, No. 5 Brown, No. 9 Michigan, No. 12 Ohio State and No. 14 Duke as well as Alabama, Iowa, Notre Dame and UCLA on Friday.
Coming off a Big Ten Boat of the Week performance its last time out, Indiana's Varsity Eight had a 6-1 head-to-head record during the opening day of the Big Ten Invitational. In the morning, IU's top boat finished second behind Brown, the top-ranked program in the regatta, and outpaced Duke, Ohio State and UCLA. The Hoosier V8 won its afternoon race outright, in front of Notre Dame, Michigan State and SMU. Indiana's Varsity Eight improved to 15-4 head-to-head on the season with a 5-4 mark against ranked crews.
IU's Varsity Four had similar success, with the same record as the V8 against the same opponents. The V4 held off Notre Dame in the second session, finishing in 7:29.779 just ahead of the Fighting Irish in 7:31.090.
The Indiana Second Varsity Eight recovered from a morning fourth-place result to win in the afternoon. IU finished far ahead of the field with a time of 6:44.602, nearly 12 seconds faster than second-place Michigan State (6:56.543).
Indiana's Novice Eight crew also raced to victory in the afternoon in 7:00.313, ahead of Notre Dame (7:03.658) and Michigan State (7:21.534).
The Big Ten Invitational concludes Saturday with the final session, set to kick off for the Hoosiers at 8:40 p.m. ET. Indiana will race Tennessee, Rutgers, Duke, Michigan, Ohio State and Alabama.
