No. 16 IU Rowing Closes Weekend at Big Ten Invitational
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 16-ranked Indiana rowing finished its weekend at the Big Ten Invitational Saturday (April 20) with the third and final session of the regatta at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
IU's Saturday was highlighted by second-place finishes from its Second Varsity Eight and Novice Eight crews after both had won races during the Friday afternoon session.
The Hoosiers gained experience in their buildup to the 2024 Big Ten Rowing Championships on May 19, racing a collection of highly-rated programs and conference opponents this weekend. Indiana will host the 15th Annual Dale England Cup in one week (April 27), its final competition leading up to the championship regatta.
"We focused on building upon each race as we moved through the weekend and taking full advantage of competing against schools we don't see often," senior Niamh Monk said of the 2V8. "The crew is eager to get back on Lake Lemon as we move towards the Big Ten Championships."
"I think this weekend's races were a great step before Big Tens," added senior Megan Mills, of the Varsity Eight crew. "The team is pumped and ready for next weekend!"
Mills and IU's top boat improved their head-to-head record to 16-6 and 5-4 against ranked opponents through the weekend's racing.
"It was great to race so many schools before Big Tens," said Varsity Four senior Avery Thorpe. "It's the last time racing in Sarasota with the other seniors on our team, and I'm happy with the way our team fought against competitive crews."
"As a boat, I think we learned a lot about racing when the stakes are high and how to push it when it's needed," freshman Ava Olson, of the Novice Eight, said. "I'm feeling really excited going into Dale England Cup and especially Big Tens!"
