BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After winning the 2024 title in dramatic fashion, No. 7-ranked Indiana will look to defend its Big Ten crown this week at the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University.
The meet begins Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening with the first set of finals in the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. The following three days will consist of two sessions, with preliminaries in the morning to determine final seeding for the evening session. Fans can stream all seven sessions via the B1G+ digital platform.
IU is the top-ranked team coming into the meet, ahead of No. 10 Michigan, No. 12 USC, No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 23 UCLA and No. 24 Minnesota.
"We are excited to compete against the rest of the Big Ten this week," Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "This is one of the best conference meets in the country, and it's a gift to go up against some of the best squads in the nation."
"We're looking forward to another exciting conference championships," IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "The team is ready."
The Hoosiers won the 2024 conference championship in walk-off fashion, out-touching four-time defending champion Ohio State in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, to win the meet by half of a point. Indiana totaled 16 medals and eight championships over the week.
Indiana returns nearly a full squad from the 2024 championships, led by perhaps the most decorated women's senior contingent in program history. Seniors Anna Peplowski, Mariah Denigan and Ching Hwee Gan bring Olympic experience from the 2024 Paris Games.
Peplowski led IU with six Big Ten medals and three titles a year ago and is on podium watch again with top-four times in the conference in the 100-yard freestyle (47.68), 200-yard freestyle (1:41.63), 500-yard freestyle (4:37.06) and 200-yard backstroke (1:51.13). Friday's 200 free projects to be a premier battle among conference championships across the country – Peplowski and Michigan sophomore Stephanie Balduccini (1:41.85) boast the two fastest times nationally, and USC sophomore Minna Abraham (1:42.01) ranks No. 5.
Gan and Denigan boosted IU's final-day surge last season, earning gold and bronze in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Both should swim the final heat that will kick off the last day of finals on Saturday, owning top-eight times within the conference. Classmates Brearna Crawford and Kacey McKenna are returning champions in the 200 breast and 100 back, respectively.
The Hoosiers also return their medal-winners on the boards, led by 2024 Big Ten Diver of the Championships Skyler Liu, who won both the 3-meter springboard and platform events. Liu is supported by the sophomore duo of Ella Roselli, who medaled on 1-meter, and Lily Witte, both coming off productive freshman campaigns.
Joining Indiana's returning contingent is star sophomore transfer Miranda Grana, who made noise at the 2024 SEC Championships with four bronze medals for Texas A&M. Grana has title potential, boasting the Big Ten's best mark in the 100 fly (51.10) as well as top-three times in the 100 back (51.04), 200 back (1:50.50) and 200 IM (1:55.88).
