COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore transfer Miranda Grana introduced herself to the Big Ten Championships as the top qualifier in two events Friday (Feb. 21) morning inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University.
Grana swam the fastest time in the morning in both the 100-yard butterfly (51.27) and 100-yard backstroke (50.80). Her fly time was the best by 49 hundredths, and she was the only swimmer under 51 seconds in the 100 back. Grana was the SEC bronze medalist in both events as a freshman for Texas A&M last season.
Senior Anna Peplowski signaled continued dominance of this meet, cruising to a 1:42.55 top qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle. The reigning champion in the event is coming off her first 500 free title Thursday night, during which she set a Big Ten record in 4:33.86. Peplowski also tied the conference's 200 free record this week with her 1:40.96 that led off the 800-yard freestyle relay Wednesday night.
Indiana will have 20 finalists Friday night, including nine in championship finals, as well as the 400-yard medley relay. The Hoosiers are the No. 2-seeded relay.
Behind Grana in the 100 back, senior Kacey McKenna and junior Mya DeWitt also reached the A final. McKenna is the reigning champion in the event, swimming a 50.49 at last season's championships.
Diving again can be a big opportunity for Indiana to gain some ground as senior Skyler Liu and sophomore Lily Witte qualified for the championship final, sophomore Ella Roselli made the consolation round and freshman MK Cavanugh scored points with her 23rd-place finish in the morning. Liu is the reigning champion in the event and will again look to challenge for the high-scoring positions.
