No. 21 Hoosiers Hold Their Own at Big Ten Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 21-ranked Indiana rowing won four close head-to-head battles on Saturday (April 19), maximizing its results on the final day of the Big Ten Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
The Indiana Varsity Eight posted its third runner-up performance in three races over the weekend with Saturday's performance. IU's top boat outpaced No. 17 Oregon State for second place by eight tenths of a second, finishing runner-up to No. 9 Rutgers. The V8 recorded a 12-3 head-to-head record on the weekend and was 5-3 against ranked crews.
On Saturday, Indiana held its own while grouped with four other ranked programs in the V8, 2V8, V4 and 2V4 races – No. 9 Rutgers, No. 16 Duke, No. 17 Oregon State, No. 24 USC and unranked Alabama – recording a 12-8 head-to-head record in those events.
The Second Varsity Eight finished under three seconds out of second behind Duke and first-place Rutgers, but a late surge was enough to hold off Oregon State for third place. Indiana's time of 6:48.781 came in 54 hundredths ahead of the Beaver boat, 5.5 seconds in front of Duke and with a 17-second advantage over Alabama.
The battle for third place in the V4 race was one of the closest of the weekend as Indiana raced USC for a spot in the top half of the standings. The two boats were bow ball to bow ball in the final stretch, but the IU crew did just enough pull ahead through the finish by one tenth of a second.
Indiana's 3V4 put up another runner-up finish late in the session, beating two ranked programs in USC and No. 20 Oklahoma, behind UCLA.
