Liz Sanders enters her fourth year as the volunteer assistant coach at Indiana after spending six season as an assistant coach at Ball State.
Indiana opened up the 2014 campaign with eight straight wins, a program record for the best start in history. The Hoosiers also set a new mark when they defeated No. 4 Duke on Oct. 4, the biggest upset in program history. Indiana was led by senior Audra Heilman, who opened the season with two straight hat tricks and finished the year with 14 goals and five assists. For her efforts Heilman was named a Longstreth/NFHCA Second Team All-American, as well as First Team All-Big Ten and All-West Region. In addition, junior Sydney Supica earned Second Team All-Big Ten and All-West Region honors.
In 2013 the Hoosiers won six of their first eight games, including three straight shutouts. Junior Audra Heilman set a program record for points in a game with nine. Heilman earned First Team All-Big Ten honrs, All-Regioin honors and All-America honors for the season. Senior Hannah Boyer earned the Spirit of Indiana Director's Award, given by Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass to two students that best represent the Spirit of Indiana.
The Hoosiers kicked off the 2012 campaign with four-straight victories, including a 3-2 overtime win over Louisville thanks to a game-winning goal from 2012 first team All-Big Ten selection Morgan Fleetwood. After dropping its next contest in a game-deciding shootout to Ohio, Indiana bounced back in a big way with a shootout victory over No. 22 ranked California. That win would land the Hoosiers with a No. 24 national ranking in the NFHCA polls. At the conclusion of the regular season, Indiana headed to the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa. There, the Hoosiers blanked Northwestern 4-0 and improved to 3-0 in postseason play against the Wildcats. In the semifinal game, IU's season would come to a close, but a pair of Hoosiers were recognized on the Big Ten All-Tournament Team in Viki Green and Mariella Grote. Three members of the 2012 squad earned All-Big Ten accolades, with Fleetwood taking first team honors and Hannah Boyer and Audra Heilman earning second team nods. Fleetwood and Heilman would later take homeLongstreth/NFHCA All-West Region Honors. Fleetwood then landed All-American status when she was namedthird team All-American by Synapse Sports/womensfieldhockey.com.
In 2012, Sanders was selected to serve asone of eight captains for the inaugural Harrow Cup, a post-collegiate field hockey championship that was played June 8-9 in Philadelphia, Pa. There she serve as a captain for the Vipers where shewas be responsible for drafting her team of 18 players, appointing a team coordinator and selecting a head coach as necessary.
Between 2003-07, Sanders was a member of the Midwest High Performance Team, which captured a silver medal at the USA Field Hockey National Championship in the summer of 2007. The High Performance Training Center includes teams comprised of current and former college players, including members of the USA National Team. All participation is by selection and based on performance at regionally-based high performance centers.
The Waynesboro, Pa., native and 2001 graduate of James Madison University spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Georgetown University after earning four letters at James Madison. She was a two-time all-region and All-Colonial Athletic Association honoree and a two-time CAA All-Tournament Team selection. In 2000, she was named a STX Third Team-American and was an NFHCA Senior All-Star.
During her four-year career, Sanders helped JMU to a pair of NCAA appearances. She ranks No. 5 in school history with 51 goals and 121 points. Sanders is tied for JMU's single-game record for goals scored with five, achieved during her senior campaign.
Since 2004, Sanders has been a co-director of IU Field Hockey Summer Camps, with head coach Amy Robertson.
