
Five Hoosiers Place at Missouri Open

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Eleven members of the Indiana University wrestling team competed in the Missouri Open on Sunday. Five of those Hoosiers placed in their respective brackets, led by the second-place finish of Vince Ramos in the 149-pound freshman/sophomore division.

Nick Walpole, Nick Viterisi, George Malone and Nick Cook joined Ramos on the stand, each placing in the top-six. Ramos began his day with a 12-3 major decision over Dillon Guhrs of McKendree College. After back-to-back decisions then vaulted him into the semifinals, Ramos pinned North Carolina's Tyler St. Louis in the first tiebreaker period (8:59) to advance to the championship match.
Walpole competed in the open division at 149 pounds. He followed a second-round defeat with a pair of first-round pins in the wrestleback. Walpole then defeated Missouri's Branden Wiest, 4-3, to advance to the wrestleback finals where he dropped a 4-2 decision in sudden victory for a fourth-place finish.
Cook compiled a fall and three decisions en route to his third-place showing in the freshman/sophomore heavyweight division. Viterisi tallied two pins during his fifth-place performance. The Bloomington, Ind., native stuck Cody Gillenwater of Central Missouri at the 4:05 mark in the fifth-place bout. Malone also reached the fifth-place match before withdrawing due to injury. Malone pinned his first two opponents in the first period in addition to a 5-1 decision over Truman State's Zach Hayes.
Geno Capezio, Scott Kelly and Matt Powless each won multiple matches as well on the day. Capezio rattled off a trio of victories while Kelly and Powless notched two wins apiece.
Next for the Hoosier grapplers is the first home event of the 2008-09 season, the Hoosier Duals. The Hoosier Duals will take place inside Assembly Hall on Saturday, Nov. 29. Indiana is set to compete in five dual matches against Liberty, Ohio, Rutgers, South Dakota State and the University of the Cumberlands.
