#23 IU Drops B1G Opener at #13 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - Three Hoosiers earned victories in the Big Ten-opening dual at #13 Northwestern (6-1, 1-0 B1G) as Taylor Walsh, Luke Sheridan and Adam Chalfant proved triumphant individually despite a 27-12 team defeat for short-handed #23 Indiana (7-2, 0-1).
Walsh got the match started at 157 pounds, jumping out to an 11-3 lead over Dylan Marriott before turning the Wildcat and adding to his school record with pin number 23 this season. It also marks the 44th fall of Walsh's career, good for second most all-time at IU (47 by Viktor Sveda; 1998-2002). The redshirt junior improves to 26-1 on the year.
Chalfant posted the biggest win of the day, besting #2 Mike McMullan by a final score of 10-4. He looked be in position for a major decision, but an originally-awarded takedown was taken off the board with less than a minute remaining in the third frame. Chalfant tallied three takedowns, three near-fall points while limiting McMullan to just four escapes. The Hoosier heavyweight has won 16 of 17 bouts this season and is likely to see a bump in his nationally ranking in this upcoming week (currently ranked eighth).
Sheridan posted his 23rd win of 2013-14, grinding out a 3-2 decision at 184 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Sheridan built up a two-minute riding time advantage by staying on top for the entire second stanza. A late reversal for Jacob Berkowitz momentarily evened the score at 2-2, but Sheridan's riding time point tilted the bout in his favor.
Indiana was without the services of two regular starters. Ethan Raley, who has defeated Northwestern's Pat Greco twice this season, did not make the trip due to illness. Joe Duca (125 lbs) was forced to sit out after suffering an injury in pre-match warm-ups.
