BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the next couple months, we will take a look back at some of the players and teams from the Indiana Water Polo program that have made it the program that it is today - one of the best in the country. This week, we look back at the 2011 season.
The 2011 season was one of the most successful in school history. The Hoosiers finished with an overall record of 26-13 (3-2 CWPA W.) During the regular season, Indiana brought home two invitational championships, winning the Lancer Invitational and Maryland Invitational.
By defeating Harvard, Hartwick and Michigan, IU won the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) championship for the second time in program history. With this championship, they earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships (also the second in program history). After winning one and losing two, Indiana earned a sixth place finish.
Indiana had two Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-American's in Jakie Köhli and Cassie Wyckoff. Köhli was also given the honor of All-NCAA Tournament Team, while Wyckoff earned the CWPA Championship Most Valuable Player. Köhli and Wyckoff were joined by Cassie's sister, Lauren, on the All-Eastern Championship First Team. Freshman Shae Fournier was awarded the CWPA Rookie of the Year.
Twelve different members of the 2011 team were presented with an academic award, 10 of which won multiple. Six team members, Kelsey Campbell, Kate Dunn, Hanna Eimstad, Jakie Köhli, Nicole Redder and Lauren Wyckoff earned all three (ACWPC, CWPA, Big Ten).
