BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In a game that saw both goals scored on first-half penalty kicks, the Indiana Women's Soccer team ended Thursday's contest with Maryland in a 1-1 double overtime draw.
The stalemate marks the sixth home game that has resulted in a tie for the Hoosiers.
Indiana (3-7-6, 0-4-4 Big Ten) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute as sophomore Annelie Leitner drilled home a penalty kick, Indiana's first of the year. The call was made after a pass from freshman Cassidy Blacha found senior Jessie Bujouves in the box. Bujouves was then fouled by the Terrapins to draw the opportunity for Leitner.
"Cassidy came right in off the bench and we told her we needed a spark," said head coach Amy Berbary. "I thought she gave us that, she got higher up the field, she took the player on and played the initial ball in. We had some great movement between the front three and Jessie was able to sneak in there and get the call. Annelie is very composed and has played at the highest level internationally. It wasn't even a question for her to be able to step up and bury that for us."
The goal is the first of the season for Leitner, who also scored once during her freshman campaign last year.
However, the Indiana lead was diminished right before the break as Maryland's Alex Anthony sent in a penalty kick for the Terrapins (5-9-1, 0-6-1 Big Ten) to the left post past a diving Sarah Stone.
The teams went to the locker room tied up at 1-1 as each team fired six shots in the opening half.
Indiana did outshoot the Terrapins in the second half, 6-3, including a pair of looks by Veronica Ellis and Kayleigh Steigerwalt that were sent in on-target in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
Bujouves also recorded a shot on goal in the second half for Indiana as her attempt in the 67th minute was stopped by Maryland goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands to keep the game knotted up at 1-1.
The Terrapins were unable to get a shot on frame in the second half as they sailed two shots high and a had a third blocked by the Indiana defense.
The first overtime period featured a pair of shots from Indiana as attempts from Bujouves and freshman Caroline Dreher both went wide. Maryland's Anthony put up her seventh shot of the game in the 96th minute, but it was blocked.
Neither team was able to put up much of a threat in the second overtime period as another Anthony shot was the lone attempt of the 10 minutes.
The Hoosiers are back in action at Armstrong Stadium on Sunday to play host to Ohio State at 1 p.m. The game will feature Alumni Weekend festivities, as well as a Bark in the Park theme.
"We have to put this behind us and focus on Sunday," said Berbary. "The only game that matters now is Sunday's and need to play every game like it's our last."
