WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indiana lost to Purdue in the final dual match of the season Friday night, 30-9. Two Hoosier wrestlers came away from West Lafayette with wins -- Garret Goldman (HWT) and Taylor Walsh (165 lbs.).
The match started off with four straight bouts decided by two points or fewer. Nate Jackson would trail 3-1 going into the third period, where he would start on bottom. After a quick escape and a takedown, Jackson would lead 4-3. Just before time would run out, Chad Welch would earn an escape to send the bout into a sudden victory period. Welch would take the momentum into the extra time getting a takedown to end the match (6-4).
Like Jackson, redshirt sophomore Matt Irick would also start the third period trailing (7-4). With time running out in the final period, Irick would earn an escape followed by a quick takedown to tie the bout at 7-7. Just before the whistle sounded, though, Kissel would get the escape and bonus point for riding time to win by 9-7 decision.
For the 197-pound weight class, Luke Sheridan lost a hard fought battle with 13th ranked Braden Atwood. Sheridan led 3-1 in the third period before Atwood got an escape and a takedown. Sheridan would tie the bout at 4-4 to send the the match in to extra time, though. Just as in the 174-pound bout, Purdue's Atwood would get the takedown and end the match by winning 6-4.
Garret Goldman would earn his third consecutive victory after an 11 minute scrum with Gelen Robinson. The Boilermaker jumped out to an early lead with a first period takedown of Goldman. Goldman would earn an escape in the first and another in the second after starting down. With neither wrestler scoring in the third period, we were headed to overtime for the third bout in the last four. Just like in the third, there was no scoring from either side in the first sudden victory period. Each wrestler would get an escape in the first riding time periods to tie it at 3-3. After a second scoreless sudden victory period, Goldman would take the victory by escaping Robinson in the first 30 seconds and riding him out in the second 30 seconds.
Redshirt senior Taylor Walsh earned his 21st pin of the season by pinning Pat Robinson in 2:16. He needs five more to match his Indiana-record 26 in a season. Walsh now has 68 career pins and 124 career victories. He is now tied for fifth on the all-time Indiana wins list with current Hoosier assistant coach Matt Powless (2007-11).
The next event for the Hoosiers is the Big Ten Championships hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio on March 7-8.
