Hoosiers Wrap Up Day One at Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Taylor Walsh will compete for third-place at 165 lbs. as he led the Indiana wrestling team on day one of the Big Ten Championships Saturday at St. John Arena in Columbus.
Walsh took a 7-0 decision against Justin Alexander (Maryland) in his opening match and recorded the 69th pin of his career in 39 seconds against Garett Hammond (Penn State). In the semifinal Walsh dropped a 6-5 decision to No. 2 seed Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin).
Walsh will take on No. 5 seed Jackson Morse (Illinois) tomorrow with the winner advancing to the third-place match.
At the end of the first day the Hoosiers find themselves in 13th place in the team standings with 11.5 points.
Sophomore Nate Jackson, the No. 10 seed at 174 lbs., prevailed 5-3 over No. 7 seed Chad Welch (Purdue) in his opening round. Jackson fell 15-7 in a major decision to No. 2 seed Matt Brown (Penn State) in the next round.
Junior Garret Goldman, the No. 13 seed in the heavyweight class dropped his opening match in a fall at 2:16 to No. 4 seed Bobby Telford (Iowa).
Goldman came back to win a 10-3 decision against Chris Nash (Michigan State), but dropped a 7-2 decision in his next consolation match to No. 6 seed Michael Kroells (Minnesota).
Competition resumes tomorrow in session three at 1:00 p.m. and session four at 3:00 p.m. The Big Ten Network will air the Big Ten Championships starting at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow.
