GOLD RIVER, Calif.-- The 2015 NCAA Championships continued on Saturday with the Division I semifinals, Division II repechages, and Divisin III finals. Indiana's I Varsity Eight and II Varsity eight shared similar fates in their A/B semifinals, placing sixth in their respective heats and clinching a spot in their Petite Finals. The Hoosiers' I Varsity Four boat won their C/D semifinal heat, giving them the top seed in Sunday's C Finals race.
In the A/B semifinal races, the top three boats in each heat earn a spot in the NCAA Grand Finals. The remainder of the boats are placed in the NCAA Petits Finals to combat for a national finish between seventh and 12th.
The C/D semifinals races work in a similar fashion. The top three boats move on to Sunday's C Finals (position 13-18), and the remainder move into the D Finals (position 19-22).
Indiana's first eight boat faced some of the top competition in the nation in their semifinal heat, including familiar Big Ten foe Michigan and 2015 Dale England Cup participant Texas. The Hoosiers finished sixth in that heat with a time of 6:43.762, securing their spot in the 1V8 Petite Finals.
The Hoosiers' second eight boat took part in a hard-fought battle with Virginia through the majority of the 2000-meter course, but the Cavaliers pulled ahead in the final 500 meters. Indiana's sixth place finish (6:49.964) earned them a spot in the 2V8 Petite Final, where they will aim to finish the season as one of the top ten crews in the country.
The Varsity Four boat fell out of the national title race on Friday, but pushed onward for their strongest performance of the weekend in Saturday's C/D semifinal. The Hoosiers took first place in their heat, which included their first win over Big Ten foe Wisconsin in the 2015 season. The Hoosiers now move into Sunday's C Final as the favorite to win the race, as their time of 7:31.205 was the fastest amongst the C Finalists.
"I think we're trying to use it for tomorrow, to go out for the C Final and show exactly what we can do," said Olivia Gugliemotto on posting the fastest time in their semifinal group. "Every race, we've gotten faster. We want to keep improving on that and see how great we can do tomorrow."
