IU Posts Strong Afternoon Times at Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, South Carolina – The thirteenth-ranked Indiana rowing team competed against some of the best crews in the country on Saturday during day one of the Clemson Invitational at Lake Hartwell. The regatta was split into two sessions, one in the morning that kicked off at 8:30 a.m., and the other in the evening at 5:00 p.m.
The Hoosiers competed against six schools in most of the morning session races: No. 3 Virginia, No. 14 Washington State, Penn, Clemson, Cornell and UCF.
The afternoon session saw Indiana pitted against No. 17 Radcliffe, No. 19 Syracuse, No. 20 Louisville, UCLA, Penn and Clemson.
The First Varsity 8 boat for Indiana placed third in their morning heat, beating out Penn, Clemson, Cornell and UCF with a time of 6:53.1. Virginia's First Varsity 8 crew took first (6:43.1), and Washington State took second (6:48.2).
The afternoon heat for the First Varsity 8 was certainly a competitive one. Indiana, UCLA and Radcliffe were toe-to-toe for the majority of the race, but in the last 350m, the Hoosiers overtook the two crews to win first place with a time of 6:29.0. UCLA followed in second place at 6:30.1, and Radcliffe closely followed to take third place with a time of 6:30.5.
The Hoosiers' Second Varsity 8 boat also placed third in their morning race, recording a time of 6:58.1. Again, the Hoosiers were beat out by Virginia, finishing first with a time of 6:55.8, and Washington State, finishing second at 6:57.6.
In their second race of the day, the Second Varsity 8 crew for the Hoosiers made an impressive push at the end of the race to edge out Syracuse for the first place finish. Indiana notched a time of 6:33.0, just 0.6 seconds ahead of Syracuse.
Virginia (7:40.0) and Washington State (7:53.1) again took first and second place in the First Varsity 4 race in the morning session, followed by Clemson (7:55.4) in third place. Indiana's First Varsity 4 boat grabbed the fourth place spot with a time of 8:00.2.
Indiana's Second Varsity 4 crew finished in third place, 14.8 seconds behind first place Virginia and just 1.5 seconds behind second place Clemson. Indiana recorded a time of 7:57.0.
Indiana's First Varsity 4 finished sixth (7:38.3), and the Second Varsity 4 finished fifth (7:45.2) in the afternoon session. The Third Varsity 8 for the Hoosiers also finished in fifth place in their heat with a time of 7:06.3.
In the morning session of the 1N8/3V8 race, officials shortened the race to 1500m due to tough conditions. The Hoosiers' Novice 8 boat finished sixth with a time of 5:28.2.
