Hoosiers Beat Penn State in Triple Overtime Thriller

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's basketball team defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions, 110-102, in a triple overtime thriller at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Wednesday night in Bloomington, Ind.
With the victory, Indiana improves to 15-8 on the season overall and to 5-5 in Big Ten play. Penn State falls to 12-11 on the year and to 4-6 in league play.
Four Hoosiers tallied career-highs in points on Wednesday night, led by sophomore Thomas Bryant who scored a game-high 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the floor. Bryant also grabbed 11 rebounds to notch his sixth double-double of the season.
Robert Johnson recorded his first career double-double, setting career best marks with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Josh Newkirk scored a career-high 27 points as well on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor.
Freshman Devonte Green also had a career game for Indiana, notching his first career double-double with highs of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Hoosiers held a three-point lead, 29-26, with 6:13 remaining in the game. Over the next 1:58 minutes, IU reeled off a 9-0 run to take a 12-point lead, 38-26, at the 4:17 mark.
Over the final four minutes of the half, the two teams exchanged buckets and Indiana took a 46-37 lead at halftime.
In the first 20 minutes, IU shot a blistering 18-of-31 (58.1 percent from the floor) and dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Nittany Lions, 22-10. The Hoosiers also dominated the paint, out-pacing PSU, 28-12.
Bryant led the Hoosiers in the first half with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go with three rebounds, while Newkirk chipped in 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Johnson also reached double-figures in the first 20 minutes, adding 11 points to go with four boards.
In the second half, the Nittany Lions were able to claw back in to the game, taking a 72-70 lead in to the final second of regulation. With just three seconds left, freshman De'Ron Davis was fouled and headed to the free throw line. The rookie had ice water in his veins, hitting both shots to tie the game and force overtime.
In overtime, it was Newkirk's time to be the hero. Trailing Penn State, 80-78, with just six seconds left, the junior drove to the basket and hit a lay-up as the buzzer sounded to force the first double overtime game at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall since Feb. 7, 2004 against Iowa.
The Hoosiers led by as many as four points in the second extra session, but the Nittany Lions responded, hitting a pair of free throws with just over four seconds remaining to tie the game at 93-93, forcing just the second triple overtime game in Indiana history. The only other previous triple overtime game was on Feb. 16, 1987 when IU beat Wisconsin, 86-85.
In the third overtime, Indiana stormed out of the gate, running out to a 13-3 run over the first 3:03 to take a 106-96 advantage. Once again, Penn State came back, reeling off a 6-0 stint to cut the lead to 106-102 with under a minute left. The Hoosiers were able to withstand the charge, however, taking down Penn State, 110-102.
For the game, Indiana shot 41-of-78 (53 percent) from the floor and out-rebounded the Nittany Lions, 56-35. IU out-scored PSU, 66-40, in points in the paint.
Davis finished the contest with nine points and eight rebounds for the Hoosiers, while Zach McRoberts totaled two points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Indiana Hoosiers will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 5 when the team will travel north to face No. 10/9-ranked Wisconsin. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live nationally on CBS.
