BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Hoosiers (16-13, 6-10 Big Ten) defeated the Northwestern Wildcats (20-9, 9-7 Big Ten) on Saturday night in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Thomas Bryant had a game-tying dunk with 2.6 remaining in the game and converted the and-1 to give the Hoosiers the victory. Junior James Blackmon Jr. led the way for the Hoosiers with 13 points and three rebounds.
For the Hoosiers, Bryant finished with 11 points, three assists and six rebounds. Josh Newkirk and Juwan Morgan both tallied nine points.
As a team, Indiana held Northwestern to 4-18 from behind the arc, the Wildcats third fewest this season.
In the early going, the Wildcats etched out to a 26-14 lead after a 15-3 run over the span of 6:29.
The Hoosiers ended the first half with a 22-0 run over the final 5:01 of the half to take a 36-26 lead. The run was capped off by Devonte Green's half court buzzer-beater, as the Hoosiers went 7-for-8 from the field during the run.
In the second half, the Wildcats went on a 21-6 run over the course of 9:17 to take a 49-42 lead.
The Hoosiers climbed back and finished the game on an 8-0 run in the final 1:17.
After a missed free throw by Northwestern with 1:33 to go, IU capitalized with a Robert Johnson lay up at the other end. Johnson then pulled down a rebound and Blackmon cut the Hoosiers deficit to two with a three-pointer with 38 seconds left. The Wildcats again had an opportunity to seal it but a missed layup and rebound by Blackmon ended in a dish to Bryant for a dunk and the foul.
Following the game, senior forward Collin Hartman along with senior managers Dakota Brasher, Iain Laymon and Trey Scotti along with senior Athletic Training Student Stanford Williams were recognized for their contributions to the program.
Next up, the Hoosiers will travel to Purdue on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff against the Boilermakers.
