CLEMSON, South Carolina – With inclement weather in the forecast for later in the weekend, the Clemson Invitational got started on Friday night rather than Saturday morning as scheduled. That change in the schedule did not deter the 17th-ranked Hoosiers and the First Varsity 4 from winning its heat by over three seconds with No. 12 Wisconsin in second place.
The 1V4 used a time of 7:06.45 to claim their heat on Friday, with Wisconsin checking in second in a time of 7:09.73 and Duke in third out of seven crews with a time of 7:16.32.
The final heat of the night put the Indiana First Varsity 8 up against Wisconsin, Duke, Louisville, Oregon State, Northeastern and Boston University. After Wisconsin crossed the line in first place, it was Indiana and Duke battling it out for second place approximately four seconds behind. In the end, it would be the Blue Devils finishing less than a half-second ahead of Indiana's time of 6:27.70.
The Second Varsity 8 performed well in their opening heat in Clemson, finishing second to Wisconsin by 6.35 seconds and ahead of Oregon State and Duke by comfortable margins.
Earlier in the session, the Second Varsity 4 placed third in their heat in a time of 7:18.39, with Ohio State taking first place and Duke in second place. And the Novice 8 placed seventh in their heat, trailing the winning crew from Ohio State by 31.63 seconds.
The Clemson Invitational will resume Saturday morning with the 1V8 crews getting the session started at 8:30 a.m. The 2V8 will follow at 9:04 a.m. before the 1V4 (9:30 a.m.), 2V4 (9:56 a.m.) and Novice 8 (10:14 a.m.) round out the session.
