Two IU crews clinch lanes in the A/B semifinals
SARASOTA, Fla. – The Indiana rowing team embarked on their NCAA Championships weekend at Nathan Benderson Park on Friday morning. All three crews ended their day in the repechage, with IU's first varsity eight and varsity four boats securing top-two finishes and spots in Saturday's A/B semifinals.
The Hoosiers' first eight boat launched the weekend's events for Indiana, taking fourth place in their initial heat with a time of 6:37.616. Coxswain Morgan McKay and her crew gained a strong start in the first 500 meters to solidify their place and set a mark to beat in the afternoon.
The first eight's result from the opening heat left room for improvement, but they filled those gaps in the repechage. In a three-way battle for two positions between Southern California and Brown, the Hoosiers reeled in the Bruno boat down the stretch and pulled ahead in the final 500 meters.
Indiana nearly passed the Trojans at the line and only trailed by .045 seconds on the final result, clinching the second consecutive top-12 NCAA finish for the IU first varsity eight.
The IU varsity four crew gained an advantageous lane assignment in their repechage after taking third place in their opening heat at 7:30.643, four seconds ahead of Iowa's fourth place finish. The Hoosiers overcame an early deficit to the Hawkeyes and crossed the 1000-meter mark with a four-second lead over their Big Ten counterpart.
A steady performance in the varsity four's afternoon heat saw the Indiana rowing team earn back-to-back spots in the A/B semifinals. The Hoosiers had a one-seat lead on Princeton after 1000 meters but pulled away before the final sprint, taking a second-place finish with a time of 7:07.132.
Indiana is one of four Big Ten varsity four crews in the A/B semifinals, joining Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio State.
The second varsity eight crew took fourth-place in their first race of the day with a final time of 6:45.149, matching the IU first varsity eight in their 500-meter split. They entered a tough repechage and, although they didn't finish first or second, improved drastically with a 6:25.436 fourth-place finish. The crew finished less than two seconds behind third-place Wisconsin.
All three crews will race in their respective semifinal rounds on Saturday morning, with the first varsity eight kicking off the Division-I action. Due to a potential for adverse weather on Saturday afternoon, all regatta times shifted to start earlier in the day.
Additionally, all finals races will take place on Saturday afternoon, also due to potential conflicts with weather on the Gulf Coast. Find the updated schedule and heat sheets here.
