BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men's tennis team (2-0) began its 2019 season with a double-dose of 7-0 wins, against the Ball State Cardinals and Toledo Rockets. IU is 2-0 for the third straight year.
The day started off with strong doubles play against Ball State as the Hoosiers won the extra point after wins by Bennett Crane/Carson Haskins and Payam Ahmadi/Zac Brodney.
The first singles lineup of the season didn't waste anytime making their mark as the Hoosiers took all six spots, four of them in straight sets. At the No. 4 spot, Carson Haskins earned his first career dual play win.
Also included in the lineup were two ranked Hoosiers with Bennett Crane at No. 96 and Zac Brodney at No. 110. Both of them won their matches.
Later in the afternoon facing Toledo, Indiana continued its surge by taking the doubles point with wins at the first two spots from Fletchall/Lam and Crane/Haskins.
It was more of the same in singles with the Hoosiers notching all six singles spot victories. Playing at the top spot to begin his senior season, Antonio Cembellin pulled out a straight set win after outlasting his opponent in a second set tiebreaker. At the five spot, Payam Ahmadi played in and won his first dual match since the 2017 season.
Up next, Indiana will take the road for the next three matches beginning next Sunday at Dartmouth. Less than a week later, the Hoosiers will go west to Los Angeles to face UCLA and either San Diego or Mississippi for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
