Bloomington, Ind. – The Indiana men's tennis team (6-6) improved to 2-0 in the Big Ten when it took down No. 41 Northwestern (8-7, 1-1), 4-2, for the first time since 2012, on Friday night inside the IU Tennis Center. It is the first ranked win for Indiana since beating No. 49 Penn State on April 22, 2018.
The Hoosiers rallied from dropping the doubles point for wins at the No. 1, 2, 5, and 6 singles.
Northwestern took the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins, one at the No. 1 spot and the decider at No. 3. Bennett Crane and Zac Brodney were tied 5-5 on the middle court before the match was left unfinished.
The Hoosiers started off strong in singles when Antonio Cembellin raced out to a 6-0 first set win. Cembellin followed with a 6-3 second set win to tie the match at 1-1. At the top spot this year, the senior from Spain is 7-2.
Results from the completion of the next two matches went in IU's favor as Bennett Crane picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 and Vikash Singh followed with a straight-set win at No. 6 to put the Hoosiers up 3-1.
The Wildcats picked up their second win with a victory at No. 3, leaving the match to be decided on No. 4 and No. 5, both in third sets. To get to a third set, Zac Brodney won his second set 6-3.
On No. 5, a first set tiebreaker win from Andrew Redding proved to be crucial for the Hoosiers as his match went into a third set. Redding made it 4-2 in the final set and won the next two of three games to clinch the win for IU and his sixth victory of the season.
Indiana closes the weekend out with a match against the Washington Huskies on Sunday, March 3 with first serve at 11 AM. Fans in attendance at the IU Tennis Center will receive free donuts and coffee.
