Hoosiers Pull Off Win Over Drexel, 4-3; Weiss Plays Hero In Double Overtime

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Indiana Field Hockey turned up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion as they took down the Drexel Dragons in double overtime, 4-3. Senior Sheridan Weiss had the game winning goal with some help from senior captain Kelsey Giese.
KEY MOMENTS
• Drexel was the first to strike in the contest as they were able to tack one on the board from a drawn penalty corner, making the score 1-0.
• Indiana would sneak a shot past the goalie from Mary Kate Kesler as the Hoosiers evened the contest at 1-1. Drexel answered right back with a goal of their own to regain the lead before going into halftime. Indiana outshot the dragons, 6-1 in the second frame.
• Kennedy Reardon saw her first career goal in the Cream and Crimson as she picked up a rebound to score and tie the game in the third quarter. The Dragons quickly drew a penalty corner that led to a goal by Drexel. The Hoosiers were able to answer right back with a penalty corner and goal of their own. Kesler earned her second goal of the match as both teams were knotted at three. A save by junior goalkeeper Sachi Ananias ended the period.
• Neither team could get anything going in the fourth quarter, but a key save by Ananias on a Drexel corner forced the contest to go to overtime.
• In the first overtime frame, a pair of shots from sophomore Hailey Couch and senior captain Kelsey Giese went wide as the Hoosiers started the period off with some offense of their own. Another key save for Ananias towards the end of the period to force double overtime.
• With 2:32 on the game clock in double overtime senior Sheridan Weiss was able to tee up a shot, that was assisted by Giese, and get it past the keep to give the Hoosiers the edge and the win, 4-3.

• Head Coach Kayla Bashore earned her first win as the head field hockey coach at Indiana.
• Freshman midfielder Kennedy Reardon scored her first career goal in an Indiana uniform.
• Senior forward Sheridan Weiss served up her first game winning goal of her career.
• Mary Kate Kesler (2), Kennedy Reardon (1), and Sheridan Weiss (1) all dished out goals in the match.
• Kelsey Giese (1), Andi Jackson (1), and Sofia Keen (1) all recorded assists.
• The Hoosiers outshot the Dragons, 25-14 while also getting the edge on corners, 10-7.
• Senior Captain Kelsey Giese led the team in shots as she had seven throughout the match.
• Junior Goalkeeper had five saves in the win. She is now 1-1 on the season.

The Hoosiers will remain home next weekend as they play host to Miami (OH) and Ball State. The match against Miami (OH) is set for Friday, Sept. 6 beginning at 3 p.m. ET while the contest vs. Ball State will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8.
