Indiana Nets Nine Against Trine
10/9/2021 11:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer
With this week's shutouts of Omaha and Trine complete, the Hoosiers look forward to jumping back into Big Ten Conference play Tuesday (Oct. 12) at home against Ohio State.
KEY MOMENTS
• Junior forward Victor Bezerra opened the scoring in the ninth minute assisted by freshman forwards Tommy Mihalic and Samuel Sarver. Within the next one minute and 35 seconds of regulation, both Sarver and Mihalic, respectively, etched their names in the scoresheet to give Indiana a 3-0 lead after 10:27.
• Dispossessing Trine in its own half, Maouloune Goumballe found Brett Bebej, who passed to Sarver, who then put a through ball in to Bezerra with plenty of space between two defenders just inside the 18-yard box. Bezerra took a touch, beat the keeper and had his brace in the 16th minute.
• IU netted four more goals in the half, with a Daniel Munie header, Joe Schmidt penalty and strikes from Herbert Endeley and Sarver converted. Endeley and Sarver both deposited in the 45th minute within a span of 11 seconds.
• Indiana's lone goal of the second half came in the 61st minute. Endeley played down the right wing for Lukas Hummel, who served a perfect cross for Ryan Wittenbrink to slot in at the far post.
NOTABLES
• Indiana scored its highest tally since a 9-0 victory over Kentucky on September 25, 1997.
• The 11 seconds between the 45th minute goals stand as the second-shortest duration between consecutive goals in program history. Armando Betancourt (60:40) and Manuel Gorrity (60:50) scored within 10 seconds of each other on September 11, 1980 against Purdue.
• To open the match, Bezerra, Sarver and Mihalic all scored in a span of one minute and 35 seconds, the fifth-shortest duration between three goals in program history and the shortest since Rod Castro (44:56), Pat McGauley (45:41) and Pat McGauley (46:29) all scored within one minute and 33 seconds of each other on September 23, 1983 against Northwestern.
• The Hoosiers allowed zero shots on goal and zero corners as the IU defense earned its second consecutive clean sheet.
• Schmidt and Wittenbrink each scored their first goals of the season.
• Luke Boha, Andrew Goldsworthy, Isaac Sarosy, Trey Kapsalis, Bryant Pratt and Alex McGill all saw action for the first time this season.
• Bezerra has scored in three straight matches, earning four goals and an assist in that span.
• Sarver netted two goals and added three assists to record seven points in the match.
• Saturday's contest marked the first-ever matchup between Indiana and Trine.
