Gould Earns Silver
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The men's and women's diving team collected three medals on the first day of competition at the 2021 Big Ten Diving Championships on Thursday night at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center at Purdue.
MEN'S 1-METER DIVE
Redshirt junior Andrew Capobianco was dominant in his Big Ten Championship set on the 1-meter springboard, winning with a score of 437.35. All six of his dives registered a score of at least 67.50 points, with three dives north of 75 points.
Senior Mory Gould turned in a career-best score of 409.05 to earn the silver medal in the event. His set included three dives with scores in excess of 70 points and all six went above 58.50 points.
Junior Cole VanDevender hit three different dives for at least 55 points in the Consolation Final. He finished 11th with a final score of 305.90 to capture valuable points for Indiana.
WOMEN'S 3-METER DIVE
Freshman Anne Fowler needed just over 70 points on her final dive to vault into the lead. She delivered a 72.00-point beauty to clinch the Gold medal, a career-best score (373.90), and the second-highest six-dive point total in school history. Her dive sheet consisted of four scores over 60 points.
Freshman Tarrin Gilliland registered a gritty performance, scoring a career-high 344.85 points to earn a fifth-place finish. Five of her six dives eclipsed the 50-point barrier, including a series of three-straight dives over 60 points.
Junior Alyssa Wang closed strong, scoring 110.70 points in her final two dives to finish 15th out of the Consolation Final with 279.90 points.
NOTABLES
• Capobianco becomes the 10th Indiana men's diver to win the 1-meter competition at the conference level since the format changed to six dives in 2001. The Hoosiers have won seven of the last nine championships in the event.
• Between Capobianco and Gould, Indiana secured seven dives of 70-plus points. The remaining six divers in the field combined for three such dives.
• Gould captured a career-best score in the event and moved into eighth on the all-time performer list. He is the ninth diver in program history to hit 400 points in a six-dive set off the 1-meter board.
• Fowler becomes the fourth IU women's diver to win the 3-meter Big Ten title since the event changed to a six-dive set in 2006, the first since Christina Loukas in 2009. The Burke, Va., native, turned in the second-best score in team history in the event, narrowly missing Loukas' mark (375.70) set in 2008.
• The women's 3-meter field consisted of championship winners from the last three seasons. Reigning champ Emily Bretscher (Purdue) finished third, while two-time winner Sarah Bacon (Minnesota) took fourth.
• Between the preliminary and final rounds, Indiana divers secured 10 NCAA Zone Qualifying marks, including seven A Standard scores.
