BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – 70 IU students who participate in intercollegiate athletics across five winter sports earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday.
"Congratulations to our winter sports students for their success in the classroom and for establishing a new IU record for Academic All-Big Ten honors," said IU Vice President and Director Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson. "Our success in the classroom is a critical component of our not only our department's mission, but also the success of our students after their time as IU student-athletes has concluded. Congratulations to our students, their families, and our Academic Services staff led by Lorian Price for a job extremely well done."
The 70 Academic All-Big Ten honorees are a record for the most for this term. The Big Ten also recognizes student-athlete for this honor in the fall and spring.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be enrolled full-time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the spring seasons and will present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades.
