Indiana Field Hockey to Host No. 6 Iowa and Travel to Ball State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– It's a quick turnaround of a weekend for Indiana Field Hockey, after just playing on Tuesday against No. 5 Louisville. On Friday, Oct. 13, Indiana will play No. 6 Iowa at Deborah Tobias Field. Then, on Oct. 15, Indiana will make the short trip to Muncie, Ind. to play at Ball State.
WEEKEND REWIND:
-Last weekend the Hoosiers won on the road but came up just short at home.
-Indiana won in Louisville against Bellarmine, 1-0, on Sunday, but fell at home to No. 5 Louisville, 1-0, in Tuesday's game.
-With the weekend's results, the Hoosiers' record now stands at 5-8 on the season and 0-4 in Big Ten play.
-Against Bellarmine, the Indiana defense held strong, holding the Knights to two shots in the first half.
-Indiana freshman Ava Winner scored in the second quarter to give Indiana the lead. This was Winner's first career collegiate goal. The goal was assisted by Lara Mortz.
-Indiana would hold Bellarmine scoreless for the remainder of the game to win in Louisville.
-Indiana outshot Bellarmine, 10-6, and junior goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge recorded three saves.
-Against Louisville, both teams were locked into a defensive battle through the majority of the game.
-After three quarters, it was tied at 0-0 with eight saves made amongst both teams.
-Louisville took a 1-0 lead in the fourth quarter from a 54th minute goal. Indiana built opportunities in response with three shots taken, including one being off a penalty corner, but could not convert.
-Louisville would hold on to win the game 1-0 to finish the weekend.
-Arabella Loveridge had a fantastic game, recording six saves and holding Louisville to only one goal.
LOOKING AHEAD:
-Indiana has a challenging slate remaining of their final six regular season games.
-Of the six teams, four of them are ranked in the top 20 of the NFHCA Coaches Poll.
-Three of the final six games will be at home and the other three will be on the road.
QUICK STATS:
-Nine different Hoosiers have scored a goal this season: Sarah Charley, Inés Garcia Prado, Jemima Cookson, Yip van Wonderen, Maggie Carter, Meghan Dillon, Anna Mozeleski, Meredith Lee and Ava Winner.
-Charley leads the way with four goals while Dillon, Garcia Prado and van Wonderen are the team's second leading goal scorers with two each. Everyone else has notched one.
-Charley also leads the team in shots taken with 22. Sixteen of those have been on goal. Yip van Wonderen has taken 17 shots this season with eight of them being on goal.
-As a team, 16 Hoosiers have recorded a shot taken. Seventy-four of the team's 118 total shots (62.7%) have been on goal.
-Garcia Prado and Charley both lead the team in assists with three. Sofia Arrebola Garcia, Cookson and Keld each have two assists. Yip van Wonderen and Lara Mortz have one assist thus far.
-Shannon McNally and Arabella Loveridge have split time in the cage this season. McNally has played in eight games and has recorded 24 saves. Loveridge has made nine appearances this season and has 39 saves.
-Indiana's defense is holding opponents to just 1.85 goals per game.
-Kennedy Reardon and Sarah Charley are the most experienced players on the team with each player appearing in 84 career games. Reardon has been a Hoosier her whole career while this is Charley's first season at IU.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-Indiana opens the weekend with at home against No. 6 Iowa. The Hawkeyes own a 10-2 record on the year with a 2-2 Big Ten mark.
-Iowa started their season with nine-straight wins before dropping two of their last three games.
-The Hawkeyes boast wins over No. 12 Wake Forest, No. 1 North Carolina and No. 14 Michigan, among others. The losses have come to No. 11 Ohio State (9/29) and No. 2 Northwestern (10/6).
-Iowa freshman Dionne van Aalsum has been off to a phenomenal start to her career, boasting an NCAA-best 23 goals in her first collegiate season.
-Lieve Schalk and Annika Herbine are the team's leading distributors with eight and six assists, respectively.
-Iowa leads the all-time series with Indiana, 21-5.
-Ball State has a 5-7 record and has been a streaky team all season. After opening up with an 0-4 record, the Cardinals would go on to win their next five games. Currently, the team is looking to snap their three-game losing streak.
-Five Cardinals have notched a goal this season with Fleur Knopert leading the team with 11.
-The Hoosiers own an eight-game winning streak and a 15-5 all-time record against Ball State.
OVERTIME TIDBITS:
-Friday's game vs. Iowa will be a reunion for Indiana assistant coach Leah Zellner. Zellner joined the Indiana staff in March after playing five seasons for the Hawkeyes from 2018-2022.
-In her time in Iowa City, Iowa posted a 72-29 record which included two Big Ten regular season championships (2019, 2021), a Big Ten Tournament title (2019) and five NCAA Tournament appearances. In the 2020-21 season, the Hawkeyes reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament.
-Zellner made 96 appearances with 70 starts while recording 15 goals and ten assists in the course of her career.
-Indiana's 2022 team captains of Sydney Keld and Kennedy Reardon are both team captains again in 2023. Senior Jemima Cookson was voted in as a team captain in the spring, as well.
-Indiana's roster features three pairs of former high school teammates who are now playing together again.
