Track and Field Continues 2024 Season at Commodore Challenge

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana track and field kicks off the new year with the two-day Commodore Challenge meet, hosted by Vanderbilt this weekend at the David Williams II Recreation and Wellness Center.

Last Time Out:
• The Hoosiers began their season with the Indiana Early Bird Meet on Dec. 8th, 2023, for a successful opening meet with 30 personal bests achieved in addition to 15 athletes making their first collegiate debuts.
• Graduate sprinter Kenisha Phillips broke the school record in her first appearance with the Hoosiers after running a 37.41 in the 300 meters.
• Jessica Mercier won the women's pole vault with a height of 4.20m/13-9.25. Mercier moved up in the top-10 for the fifth highest clearance in program in the women's Pole Vault.
• Antonio Laidler won the 60m dash with a personal best time of 6.67 and now holds the third fastest time in program history. Laidler's time is also tied third in the NCAA.
The Hoosier Lineup:
Indiana will have 57 student-athletes compete in 18 events over the course of two days. 26 athletes are scheduled to compete in at least two events throughout the weekend.
"We are very excited to start of the 2024 track and field season," Indiana Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Ed Beathea said. "We are looking forward to getting an idea on where the team is at and using this first meet as preparation for our home meet next weekend at the Indiana Invitational. I think that we have some student-athletes who are ready to put up some pretty good marks and times and I know that they are excited and energized to get started. They have come back from Christmas break in good shape and with lots of enthusiasm. We are really excited about getting started."
Sprints and Hurdles:
• Indiana will have 19 sprinters compete in the 60 meters, 300 meters, 200 meters, 60 meter hurdles, 400m and 600m races.
• Symone Adams and Kylee Poulton will go to work in the 60 meters, with a heavy stack of competition in Trelee Banks, Ray Brodie, Antonio Laidler, Gage Pratt on the men's side.
• Olivia Gee and John Colquitt look to take care of business in the 60 meter hurdle event.
• Adams will also compete alongside teammate Cambell Wamsley in the 300 meters. Colquitt will do the same on the men's side.
Sophomore Olivia Gee will represent the Hoosiers in the 60-meter hurdles and the 200 meters. Poulton and freshman Kristina Vincic are also scheduled for the 200 meters along with Banks, Brodie, Pratt and Otto De St Jeor.
• Phillips and Ryann Parrish will run the 400 meter while Parrish doubles up in the 600 meters. Micah Camble, Jaylen Grimes, David Olowookere, Novo Onovwerosuoke will also make their presence in the 400 meters.
• Indiana will enter three relay teams, two on the men's side compromised of the Hoosiers sprinters and mid-distance runners.
Jumps:
• Serena Bolden and Paola Fernandez-Sola and Alex Smith will put up a strong competition in the Long Jump on Friday.
• Bolden will also compete alongside Mahogany Jenkins in the Triple Jump event.
• Taylor Schoonveld, Eli Crouch, Deepak Laungani and Grayson Rolen will kick off the two-day meet in the High Jump on Friday afternoon.
• Smith will also show out his track skills and run the 60-meter dash.
Throws:
• Freshman thrower Bridget Beyer and junior Makayla Hunter will throw the weight this weekend. On the men's side, Sean Mockler, Hunter Smith and Tyler Reyna will also compete in the event.
• Beyer will throw in her first collegiate meet this weekend while Mockler is set to make his season debut in the Music City.
Distance and Mid-Distance:
• A combined 15 men and women are set to run in their first race of the year.
• Freshman Amelia Dodds will run the 300 and 400 meters in her collegiate debut.
• Veronica Hargrave is set to make her first appearance on the track in the 600 and 800 meter events alongside junior Maddie Russin. The men will have two runners double in the event in Nico Colchico and Parker Raymond.
• Jaylen Castillo and Keelan Grant will double in the 800 meters and double again in the 1000 meters.
• Keefer Soehngen will run the 300 meters and again join Colchico and Raymond in the 600 meter event.
• Six Hoosiers will compete in the Mile race including Hargrave and sophomore Katelyn Winton. The men will have a heavy presence in the race with Owen Forberg, Aidan Lord, Andrew Mangum and Nolan Satterfield.
• Brayden Henkle and Garrett Hicks will run the 3K on day two of the meet.
Pole Vault:
• Seven vaulters will compete in Nashville. IU will have four men's pole vaulters on the runway on opening day of the meet. Tyler Carrel, Tyler Sierks, Nathan Stone and Riley Johnston will be competing for the Hoosiers facing their first big competition of the season.
• Taylor Jarosinski, Jessica Mercier and Libby Saloga will compete on the final day. In the last meet, Mercier cleared a height of 4.20m/13-9.25 which ranks in the top-10 in the NCAA.
Multis:
Freshman multi duo Max Grangier and Garrett Messer will double in the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and the 4x400 relay.
Garrett Messer will run the 60-meter hurdles and 4x400 and also compete in the shot put and long jump in the field.
Competition: Indiana will compete against 19 other institutions including, Arkansas State, Austin Peay State, Belmont, Cumberland, Evansville, Illinois, Lipscomb, Murray State, Ole Miss, Savannah College of Art and Design, Tennessee, Tennessee Martin, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Trevecca, Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky, William Carey and York.
