Haskett Runs Sub-4 Minute Mile, Hoosiers Claim Six Titles on Day One of Indiana Invitational
1/19/2024 11:45:00 PM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Track and Field Team claimed six event titles behind a productive day from Austin Haskett who joined the sub-four-minute mile club and jumper Paola Fernandez-Sola who earned a top-10 mark in the NCAA.
Haskett ran a time of 3:58.59 in his first race of the season. Not only did he set a personal record, but he recorded the fifth fastest time in the country. He takes nearly six seconds off his previous time (4:04.01) and enters the No. 10 spot in program history.
"Austin is the epitome of what you want in a college athlete," Head Cross Country Coach and Associate Track and Field Coach (Distance) Eric Heins said. "He because he shows up every day with a great attitude and does everything, we ask him to. He also does everything to take care of himself, so that he can show up on race day and perform. To set a goal and to break four minutes, especially on your home track, and to go out and do it is kind of icing on the cake. I am really proud of him and extremely happy for him. He was obviously awarded with a great time out here in front of the home crowd."
Mariah Wehrle was locked in for the women's mile, running a personal best time of 4:51.16. Freshman Lily Myers finished third in the race with a time of 4:55.98.
"The women's group has been training well together," Heins said. "It was great to see Mariah get that win and run a PR, and to see Lily run in her first collegiate race. Her time is probably equivalent if not close to her PR or mile. Again, it's just a matter of them continuing to build that confidence as a group. The fitness is there, so it's a matter of them feeling good on race day and executing it, having all of them run great on the same day."
Skylar Stidam rounded out the distance event after he claimed the 5000-meter title with a time of 14:28.83.
In the field, Fernandez-Sola claimed the first event title in the Long Jump competition with a season-best mark of 6.24m/20-5.75. Her performance today landed her the No. 10 spot in the NCAA.
Fernandez -Sola had a chaotic start to her meet, missing the first two jumps. She controlled what she could control, and it paid off.
"My first two jumps were not good," Fernandez-Sola said. "Coach [Mike Erb] told me to control what you can control, try to stay warm and get it together. Thank God I was able to do that. I think this is my third best jump indoor and I just needed a white flag. I was not worried about numbers. It was chaotic, but we made it work. I learned that you have to just work with what you have."
Makayla Hunter threw another personal best in the weight 20.68m/67-10.25 after coming off a strong performance last weekend. Her mark is currently ranked No. 19 in the nation.
Mahogany Jenkins had another podium finish from the field. She placed second in the High Jump clearing a height of 1.69m/5-06.25.
After back-to-back school records, Kenisha Phillips won her first career 600-meter race with a time of 1:32.84.
To end the day, John Colquitt picked up a win in the 200 meters. He ran a time of 21.81 to claim the title. Colquitt also sprinted the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.14) to advance to the finals tomorrow.
The Hoosiers wrapped up day one with 18 personal bests in their third competition of the season.
