Mercier Shatters Pole Vault School Record on Final Day of Meyo Invitational
2/3/2024 5:30:00 PM | Track and Field
Mercier had the entire team cheering her on in her record breaking performance. "I really like the atmosphere of our team. It was really helpful to hear, a cheering section," Mercier said. "I knew this was a fast track, and I had really great confidence going into the meet that I was going to do okay."
Not only did she have the support of her teammates but a great coach too. He has been very instrumental in helping her get to where she is at today.
"Coach Wiseman has a very chill attitude, and I needed someone who would help make me progress and make pole vault fun again. He has really helped me to not over think and just allow myself to pole vault."
She crushed the previous record of 4.35m set by Sydney Clute, now Walters, that was set in 2016. Walters is now an academic advisor for the team and is still chasing her goals in the pole vault.
"I am thankful that I got it [the record], and it's nice to have my name in the record books. Sydney is great. She is still competing. So knowing that I am as good as her is a blessing."
Mercier ranks third in the Big Ten and is No. 5 in the NCAA.The Hoosiers also set 10 more personal bests for a combined 25 on the weekend. The 4x400 men's and women's relays also ran season-best times.
Morgan Snow won the women's 400 meter open with a time of 55.67.
Short sprinters Antonio Laidler and Ray Brodie advanced to the finals after great performances in the semifinals.
Nolan Satterfield ran a personal-best in the Mile with a time of 4:15.42 while Phoebe Bates led the women with a time of 4:54.49.
Hunter Smith and Tyler Reyna had solid performances in the weight throw. Reyna set a new personal best with 18.12m while Smith tied his personal record of 18.16m.
