Bloomington, Ind. – The Indiana men's tennis team (5-6, 1-0) got back in the win column by beating the Purdue Boilermakers (4-4) on Saturday afternoon inside the IU Tennis Center. This is the third straight year in which the Hoosiers have beaten their in-state rivals.
After losing in doubles, the Hoosiers responded with singles wins at the No. 1, 3, 5, and 6 spots to earn the match victory.
Purdue jumped ahead in doubles with a quick win at No. 2, but the Hoosiers pair of Payam Ahmadi and Antonio Cembellin knotted it up with a 6-4 win on court 3. The Boilermakers led 5-4 on the remaining top court but Brandon Lam and Carson Haskins tied it at 5-5, and then again at 6-6 to push the match to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Purdue got the result and the doubles point.
The Hoosiers saw themselves in a 2-0 hole after the first singles match went to Purdue, on court No. 2. Although falling in the match, Bennett Crane forced a second-set tiebreaker after losing 6-0 in the first set.
From there, it was all IU as the final four match results went in favor of the home team.
Andrew Redding (No. 5) and Vikash Singh (No. 6) took care of business on the back end of singles to tie the match at two apiece. Redding improved to 5-2 on the season and Singh won his second career match.
With three remaining courts, the Hoosiers saw a path to victory as two of the three courts had IU up a set. The first domino to fall came from freshman Carson Haskins who boosted the Hoosiers into a 3-2 lead with a straight-set victory that included a 9-7 win in the second set tiebreaker. Through 10 matches, Haskins has seven wins.
Minutes after Haskins won, Indiana clinched its Big Ten opener win at the top spot when Antonio Cembellin won 6-4, 7-5 for his sixth victory this season.
The Hoosiers are home again next weekend when they face Northwestern on Friday, March 1 at 6 PM and Washington on Sunday, March 3 at 11 AM. Against Northwestern, free tacos will be offered and on Sunday, donuts and coffee will be provided before first serve.
