Wrestling Faces Series Rematch With Appalachian State

Repeats in store for Oliver, Martin
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Before the nation's head-first dive into the tournament postseason, Indiana and seven other Big Ten teams will pair off with eight of the nation's conference dual champions and the NWCA National Dual Championship Series. And for the second year in the row, the Hoosiers will meet SoCon dual champion Appalachian State in the annual showcase. Indiana will look for a win on the road after dropping last season's matchup to the Mountaineers, who won 21-13 in Bloomington.
The meet provides a handful of important matches for Hoosiers on the bubble of NCAA Championships consideration, such as Chris Perez's (149) projected meeting with #18 Matt Zovistoski and Bryce Martin's (165) rematch against Forrest Przybysz. A pair of national contenders, #6 Nate Jackson (184) and #9 Denzel Dejournette (285), will be on display as well.
The dual will be the sixth in the eight-meet series, and both the live statistics and mat stream will be hosted on TrackWrestling.com.
Probable Starters: Indiana (9-9, 2-7) vs. #20 Appalachian State (13-2, 8-0 SoCon)
Hoosier Notes:
Last Time: Jackson Gets No. 100
Indiana finished the regular season with two Big Ten dual meets last weekend, picking up losses to No. 3 Iowa and at No. 10 Illinois. Senior Nate Jackson went unbeaten on the weekend with a 24-9 major decision over Mitch Bowman (Iowa) before taking a 9-6 decision over #12 Emery Parker Illinois.
The win over Parker was significant: it was Jackson's 100th career victory and it capped an unbeaten dual meet regular season record. No Hoosier has done that since former All-American Matt Powless (2011-12).
Two other Hoosiers scored important slump-snapping victories. Fletcher Miller (285) won a last second 3-1 decision over Steven Holloway (Iowa) on Friday; Cole Weaver (141) won his first match in two weeks with a second-period pin on Mousa Jodeh (Illinois).
Six in Second Coaches' Poll
The second reveal of the NWCA Coaches' Panel rankings were revealed on Friday, Feburary 10. Elijah Oliver (#26 at 125) and Nate Jackson (#7 at 184) continued their path to another NCAA appearance; Devin Skatzka (#18 at 174) built from his 5th-place finish at Midlands to amass a 22-9 record.
Jake Danishek (#28 at 157) scored a pair of Big Ten dual wins to stay in the hunt for his first NCAA qualification, while Bryce Martin (#26 at 165) climbed four positions with a three-match winning streak.
Joining the Hoosiers in the rankings is Chris Perez (149), who aims to end his career with another trip to the NCAA Championships. Perez is 9-8 on the year with a winning record in Big Ten duals.
Series History
The Hoosiers and Mountaineers clash for the fourth time since their first encounter in 1993, where Indiana won 22-18 at the Peach State Duals in Atlanta. The Hoosiers won the next meeting in 2006, 38-9, but Appalachian State regained ground with a 21-13 victory last season in their dual series pairing.
This will be the Hoosiers' first dual meet in Boone, North Carolina, and they'll aim to prevent the Mountaineers from tying the series.
Hello Again
As expected with the announcement of the matchups, the bout card projects a couple of rematches from last year's dual meet. Especially exciting is the bout with Elijah Oliver (125) and Vito Pasone, as it stole the show last year. Oliver took a 10-9 decision with a last-second takedown from a restart.
Bryce Martin (165) and Forrest Przybysz will settle a 1-1 series, after locking up twice last season. Przybysz took the Keystone Classic match, 12-7, while Martin won the dual series bout 5-4.
